Common terms encountered with IHUB usage
DNS: Domain Name Server this is the server that transforms a website name like yahoo.com into 209.131.36.159
I.P: Internet Protocol this is your numerical identification assigned to you by your internet provider and is what your computer is recognized by on the internet.
LAN: Local Area Network this is any combination of computers, gaming systems, voip devices, ihubs and anything else that you can connect to and manage behind a router.
WAN: Wide Area Network this most commonly refers to the internet. The devices you hook up that are your LAN then communicate with other devices outside your LAN by way of a WAN.
Gateway: This is usually a router but also can be a cable modem, switch or access point. It is the point at which your LAN access's the WAN.
Server: This is (as explained in terms that apply to the ihub) the computer that you log into from Sonicview that will have the "control words" necessary to decrypt DN programming. A server typically has an application running on it and provides a service to those logging on to it.
Proxy: A proxy is someone elses i.p that has typically been port scanned and those results posted on the internet. A proxy allows you to connect to a website and instead of the website seeing your actual i.p it sees and records the proxy i.p.
Subnet: This designates your LAN behind your router. If you have a router and have multiple devices hooked up they will be on the same "subnet".
VPN: Virtual Private Network this allows you to communicate across the internet but in a private manner. A VPN restricts access to the information from outsiders that do not have permission to view the information.
TOR: The Onion Route this is a system of "relays" that allow you to communicate over the internet securely. Your information takes a random pathway through several relays. No relay ever knows the complete path it can only tell what relay the information came from and what relay it is going to give that information to.
