Signal Strength & Quality Values when Dish Pointing

Greetings All:

A lot of you ask about signal strength and quality values when pointing your dish.

The general rule of thumb is that you'll need to achieve at least 65% in both Signal and Quality to maintain a decent picture (minimum). Obviously values higher that these are ideal!

So to help you diagnose any issues you might be having here is a handy guide to help you understand where your problem may lie when pointing your dish:

Zero Strength and Zero Quality:

If this is the symptom you are experiencing, then the receiver is currently not receiving the signal from the dish.

You'll want to check all connections between your receiver and the dish.
Make sure that all of your wiring and such is plugged in correctly and the connections are snug.

One of the most common connection problems occurs when the cable coming from the dish is plugged in to the connection marked "In from Antenna," which is incorrect.

The cable coming from the dish needs to be plugged in to the connection marked "In from Dish, Digital In, or LNB IN"

Make sure that your cabling has not developed a short or that moisture might have gotten in them (especially at the dish). If you feel this is the case in your specific situation, you may want to replace the cabling, and/or have an installer check the cables for you.

0-30 Strength and Zero Quality:

If you are experiencing these levels of strength and quality, you are getting only noise signals. Make sure that there are no obstacles between the dish and satellite you are trying to scan.

40-60 Strength and Zero Quality:

With this level of strength and a lack of quality, it is very likely that the dish has moved since its initial installation or you are still off alignment. In this case you'll want to go through the Dish Installation pointing steps again.

Once you've got everything working well, mark your dish settings with a sharpie. This will give you a reference point, should any future problems occur.

You'll also want to mark your elevation and skew settings.

40-60 Strength and 30-70 Quality:

This level of strength and quality indicates that the dish needs to be fine-tuned to the satellite. You may have noticed your picture was occasionally blotchy and/or your audio may have been out of sync with the picture.

These both indicate that some fine-tuning is neded at the dish.

Optimum signal quality is between 70 and 100. But 65% shoud be your minimum goal.

I hope this helps.
