Authoring DVB MPEG files to DVD the EASY way!
The below method (inspired by somebody else) works nicely for most stand alone DVD players. However, I suggest you experiment with this method using a ReWriteable DVD, so you won't be cursing me should it not work for you or your particular DVD player.
Since most digital broadcasts have an artificially high bitrate ( > 8.0 MBit) and intentionally low resolution ( < 704 Horizontal Pixels), this MPEG file patching method is used to 'fool' TMPGenc DVD Author 1.6 into accepting non-DVD-standard MPEG files for authoring without the need for laborious re-encoding.
[NOTE: typical broadcast resolutions are 480 X 480 (e.g., most porn), 544 X 480 (e.g., most general programming), 640 x 480 (e.g., some general programming), 704 X 480 (e.g., some widescreen movies), et cetera ... the broadcast GOP lengths are also non-DVD-standard, but of lesser concern]
After capturing your DVB MPEG file,
1. launch TMPGenc DVD Author 1.6
2. click 'Create new project'
3. click 'Add file' and attempt opening your MPEG file
4. if errors shown in RED (non-DVD-standard resolution), then
4a. note ALL errors shown, then click 'Cancel' button
4b. launch DVDPatcher 1.06, click 'Browse' button, and open your MPEG file
4c. if necessary, reduce Bitrate to 8.0 Mbit
4d. if necessary, increase Horizontal Size to 720 Pixels
4e. leave the rest as is
4f. make sure you're patching 'First header only', then click 'Patch now!'
4g. review Patch settings, and if correct, then click 'start'
4h. when finished patching, DON'T close DVDpatcher!
5. in TMPGenc DVD Author, click 'Add file' and attempt opening your patched MPEG file again
5a. the file should now open without any errors shown in RED
5b. if 'the video GOP is too long', just click the 'Ignore' button and then 'Yes' to confirm
5c. click 'OK' to accept the file
[NOTE: at this point, thumbnails will have an ugly vertical GREEN bar since horizontal size is too wide ... you will correct this in the NEXT step]
6. Switch windows to DVDPatcher and change Horizontal Size back to original capture size, then 'Patch now!'. If finished adding MPEG files for this project, you may close DVDpatcher
[NOTE: in TMPGEnc DVD Author, you may still see some RESIDUAL 'ugly' thumbnail(s). To assure yourself these are residual and that your horizontal size is now correct ... click the 'Edit' button (Chapter cut edit) for each affected Clip, select 'ugly' thumbnail (in Chapter list), click 'Delete' then 'OK' to delete the 'ugly' thumbnail. Now highlight your first desired frame on timeline, click 'Set as start frame' button, then click 'Add current frame to chapter' button, then click 'OK' when finished. Your thumbnails should now look 'pretty' again (if not, verify that you did step 6 correctly)]
7. in TMPGEnc DVD Author add chapter marks, make menus, etc., as needed, and then author the output. You can also burn directly from within TMPGenc DVD Author, or (as I prefer) using an external program such as Nero Burning ROM
Finally, learn how to use TMPGenc DVD Author 1.6 ... it's a great program, and there's extensive Help under its Option menu.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GOOD LUCK! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
p.s. Most have success with this method, but some voiced complaints regarding audio-video synchronization. Not sure, but those synchronization issues are PROBABLY related to whichever DVB application (MPEG captures) you're using. I've always used RitzDVB for my DVB application (MPEG captures) and haven't had any synchronization issues, whereas synchronization complaints seem to be coming from MyTheatre users. Some have reportedly corrected their synchronization issues by first doing a demux/fix using PVAStrumento or perhaps VideoReDo. PVAStrumento has helped me repair some damaged MPEG captures. Alternatively, others have used WinDVD Creator to import/export their MPEG file for DVD compliance. As jowo wisely notes, "Sync problems [often] have to do with the 44,100 [versus] 48,000 Hz [audio] difference .... whenever you record anything .... you want to be DVD compliant .... make sure it's 48,000 Hz audio and it will definitely be in sync ...." Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread.
END C/P
NOTE: i have not actually tried to burn a dvd using this method, however i have used this b4 with ritz recorded videos and the audio was out of sync bad, i just tried this using a MyTheatre recorded video and went to edit and actually played the file inside dvd author and the video plays fine so it should record to dvd fine also... i have used other means and as soon as i can find my files i'll post another howto using a different approach...
