blocking neighbors wireless attacks
I live in a cul de sac and when my IT neighbor comes home from work everyone except him loses wireless signal. We (the neighbors) have confronted him about it and he laughs at us. Our wireless goes down within minutes of him turning on his home office light. How can we block him and get our signal back? Changing channels on our routers is pointless, nothing works. Last time I said something he replied "maybe you should get an old cd and some old cordless phone antennas to block me, it's amazing what you can find on the internet..hahahahahaha" I'm about to go put a shovel through his coax in several places. Does anyone know how we can put an end to this?

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
Set your router to use WEP or WAP security, if you are running your network wide open he is free to use it, shady as it may be he can use it. After you setup the security measures, if you find it is still happening you need to log into your router and look at the devices connected, write down the mac address of the offender and save it for the police. If he hacks in to a secure network he is then breaking the law and can be charged. If he had a computer name like "Jones Family P.C" and he is a Jones it will lead the cops to his door where they can then investigate.
If he has some random PC name like "1hydb8" then it will be difficult for you to prove he is the actual offender.
I went through this with my neighbor, a firewall and a very stern talking to was all it took to resolve in my case. In the event your router is not password protected he can actually lock you out of your own network (happened to me with the neighbor I referred to) If that does happen just reset the router with the reset button and lock it down with a password and wireless security. My neighbor thought he was smart until he realized I already had all the info I needed to play with his system if I wanted to or to turn him over to the cops.... Personally I would have messed with him instead, and he knew it....lol
It is everyone's responsibility to make sure their networks are secure.

i would go with the old method, if you can't beat them, join them. do a little research and put a stop to this guy. figure out how to block him...wireless internet forums can help you. lots of IT guys are on those forums who would be willing to help.

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
i'm using wpa-psk2 so i'm secure. he is scrambling us somehow. he hosed up an unsecure neighbor last week and was bragging about it. i am very aware that i need security measures and have never been unsecured. i'm going for the shovel i think. i did just find some software that will shut him down at my will if i know his mac id.

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
don't resort to vandalism..ur lowering yourself to his standards illegally..did a guick search on "jam wifi" and there are numerous off the shelf products available..here's one sample:
How to jam your neighbor's Wi-Fi legally | George Ou | ZDNet.com
..and don't forget to use the "mac layer address" list to ensure only the devices you want to connect do connect to your wireless router..and if ur using powerline adapters make sure you've changed the default passwords or he/they could literally plug into an outside receptical and gain access to your network (not sure but GFI outlets might block this connection..test it)

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
I am using draft n now but it is old. I am getting ready to buy new dual band n router and bridge to get my stb working better. hopefully it will shut him down. i still believe by the way he acts and talks when we confront him he is doing something else to scramble us.

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
I would try a good bluff. Tell him that the police have been informed of someone in the neighborhood that is messing with other peoples wireless signals, and see what he does. It is worth a try.

"i did just find some software that will shut him down at my will if i know his mac id."
Netstumbler is just one of a number of a freeware available to show mac addresses..
I really despise aholes like this one..
it requires you to expends value time better spent elsewhere, but you just have to educated yourself a bit more than him and doesn't sound like that will too difficult..

that's a way good idea. though, the ISP may just say "we're not responsible for your wireless configurations". then you're SOL.
vandalism would certainly feel better than anything course, that's not right

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
i'm going with the software blocking idea. fight fire with fire. i called the isp and they said there's no way he could be interfereing with our internet(right...idiots) i'm also going with a new dual band router and bridge. my linksys wrt300n is old and the wrt54gs i configured to a bridge isn't working right for my stb. i am starting a new thread to get opinions on the best router. i was leaning towards a wrt610n and wet610n combo. thanks all!!!!

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
If the guy is jamming wireless signal, then you have a valid FCC complaint. You can contact them and they will investigate. Wep can be broken fairly easily. If you want to be completely wireless secure, use MAC address filtering. You have to enter the MAC address in the list. If the MAC address is not in the list it cant connect.

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
I wonder if he's not using your bandwidth...not jamming you...but some how "leeching" your bandwidth. Have you checked your router log records to see if there is the remote chance that someone has entered and connected to your router?

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
I would get a copy of Hiren's Boot disk 9.9 and use the wifi network password finder and log into his network and see what's going on if he hasn't completlly blocked his system. There are some very useful tools on this disk. Good luck!

Re: blocking neighbors wireless attacks
a password for your router should be more than enough to stop him, more security would be wep etc. which shouldn't be necessary for your problem. It sounds like he is banning you all when he wishes from your own routers. Try your computers without the router to see if he can still manage his tricks. One would assume if he has security on his computer thats to keep you out while he can still enter yours. If his is not secure chances are another method is being used
