The send and receive RS232 (serial data transfer) chips in the receivers are somewhat fragile. You can blow them by connecting and disconnecting your data cable with the receiver and PC power ON!
You MUST have all power turned OFF when connecting those data cables.
You might even get away with it for several times and then Kableweeee!
I guess I just lucked out, because the guy who set up my system never turned the power off when he connected the data cable. Now I just leave it connected to the PC and CS6k all the time.... no problem.
The same thing applies to the coaxial cables, LNB's and switches.
ONLY make connections with Power OFF.
