Anyone ever used a USB-to-Serial cable that worked out of the box? If so where did you get it?
If the issue is not the STB , then it's the computer + USB adaptor + null cable. and the procedure tests exactly this.
C/P
This procedure refers to a loading setup using a PC serial COM (including a COM port implemented with a USB to serial COM adaptor) port connected to the STB via a null modem cable with female DB-9 connectors.
............................
Below is a step by step procedure for testing the communication link - setup and hardware - including the PC and the cable, up to the STB serial connector.
The procedure is based on what is called a loop-back test, meaning that thedata signals transmitted by the PC COM port are returned to the same port, as received data signals, by means of a wire jumper at the end of the serial data cable.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
While it won't correct your existing problem, perhaps its time to think about hitting Santa up for a unit that offers a USB port on it to simplify the loading of updates.
Some units are as little as $135.00
Just a thought.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
Try loading the bin in "Standby" mode as I described earlier and let me know if that works for you as it did for me.
To get into "Standby" mode, turn off your CW box with the rocker switch on the back. Disconnect the RG6 cable. Connect your Null cable. Turn CW Box on.
Wait a few seconds, then turn off the power button the front of the CW box, so the LED should look like this: --:--
Now try to load the bin and see if it hangs at 5% or if it manages to fully load until you see "-End" displayed on the LED

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
RG6 is the Coax cable. Try powering off the CW box, unplugging it, removing the Coax from the rear input then loading in "Standby" mode instead of "Boot" mode.
To get into "Standby" mode, disconnect the RG6 Coax cable as described above, with the box unplugged.
Then, plug the box back in, turn it on, wait until it displays the channel number on the LED then turn it off with the button on the front.
This should put the box into "Standby" mode and the LED will display "--:--"
Now try loading the bin file.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
Hey Slidn
I offered up the purchase of a new unit as a possible solution to this problem because, in my opinion, loading files to a unit over a serial cable isn't exactly cutting edge or convienient, in fact, in my experience it's just the opposite, its a pain in the $#%^&*(.
And while I understand that loading files via serial cable has been the norm in FTA land for quite some time, that doesn't mean there are not better (i.e., newer) ways of doing exactly the same thing.
Today, many FTA receivers utilize a USB port for fast and convenient loading of files ... making taking the reciever to the PC and connecting a cable, opening a loader and spoon feeding the file to the receiver a thing of the past ... let's face it this is progress.
Honestly, do you think using a loader and a serial cable is the way to go? with every ECM that comes down the pipe? NO thanks.
I've had a VS Ultra and a SV4000 unit, for quite some time, both offer USB file loading capability and I can say that in the case of the SV4000 unit, I have NEVER had to load a file to the system via serial cable, EVER! and I've had the unit for 16 months!
So, my suggestion of buying a receiver offering the modern convienience of USB file loading still stands, if you want less headaches, make sure the unit you buy offers a USB port. Some of these units are as little as $135.00 for the CW800 as an example.
As for what actually solved the user's original problem, it was to put the unit in Standby mode while loading the file, something that was offered up well ahead of my suggestion of asking Santa for a new unit.
I'm glad the problem was solved. And I still believe that units that offer a USB port for file loading are easier to live with than their serial dependant counterparts.
That's my 2 cents from here.
Thanks for taking the time to chime in on the subject, that's what makes this system so great!
