USB to Serial Adaptor?
Hi
I just got a new computer and surprise, no RS232 port....so I bought a USB to 232 adaptor but now when i try to upload the new Bin file it hangs about five percent into the process.
Anyone else had to get around this problem?

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
It's from Solarbotics in Calgary, through their HVW Tech division. It's a micro USB at one end and a 232 at the other...I just run a standard USB cable (with a micro end like you'd use on most camara) to it and then the standard 232 to the CW 600 box

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
i would try it over night, or for a long period of time. it might be doing something in the background that you don't know about.
whatever results happen from there will help better diagnose the problem.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
No..the box freeze up too, so just leaving it "overnight" isn't going to work.
For now I can unplug the box and take it over to my old computer but there's got to be a better solution somewhere?

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
did you unzip the files before loading? the box will freeze so long as the serial port is opened...

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
You'll need a null to USB cable for the CW600 unit.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
Try it form a different PC, like a buddies laptop or a different machine ... did the cable come with a driver? Some do.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
I'm loading the bin now on my old machine withthe serial port using my old 232 cable.
Going forward this isn't going to be an option.
My device manager sees the USB to Serial adaptor. There are no driver conflicts though I am waiting on the manufacturer to see if there is an updated driver.
I can load the bin file into the loader. I select port three (it's the only port that works when I use the adaptor)and when it starts.....it runs slow then when it gets to two or three per cent..stops and there's no action onthe box either.
When I load it the old way with my old computer it flies....I guess I could try loading it via USB from my laptop but not sure what that would prove since the new desktop is a very high end machine from a very high maker with very high end components.
Thanks for the input this far guys but it's still a bit of a mystery....

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
In the loader software there is a setting for the baud rate, its usually marked at 115200 or something like that, should have the ability to enter a lower rate - try 9600 it'll be slow but may just work.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
I have a CW Premium (3 of them) and a USB to Serial converter, plus a "Null" modem cable.
It only works if I load in "Standby" mode which is achieved by removing the RG6 cable from the back of the box and then booting up the box, then turning the front power button off so the LED displays this: --:--
My PC assigned the USB to Serial adapter to Com Port 3 in Device Manager, so make sure your you are selecting the correct Com Port on the CW Loader interface.
I'm running WXP Pro SP2
It also came with a mini CD with drivers, so you may have to install drivers if it came with any.
Note: Always unplug your box before connecting/disconnecting any cables or switches or anything else to it.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor?
this sounds interesting...
yes, it only works on Com 3...but as I said, hangs.
What's an RG6 cable? I have the RCAs and the coax and I set to "Boot" by pressing the back power button on while pushing down on the front power button
