I'm considering to switch from CS to ViewSat and I know the low end model is "Viewsat Platinum Lite". Since I'm so new to VS, got a few questions here:
1) How reliable is the "Viewsat Platinum Lite" model?
2) How long **in general** do you have to wait for a new BIN when it's down?
3) Does the remote or the box freeze from time to time?
Both the platinum and the platinum Lite have been very reliable models. Bins are out within a day or two and many times have been the first to be out with a new bin.
Freezing if any has to do with the Bins and not the receiver itself. When it does occur, a new bin fixes the problem.
Either the Lite or one of the CW models are good basic FTAs to go with.

I don't think that any VS model falls behind in support. When the coders release files they do so for all their VS models, there may be a slight delays but within hours. VS is considered as one of the top brands in support and reliability.
If the box freezes it's usually an issue with the BIN, and a new fix may be required to correct the problem. I know for the last couple of days many have been experiencing freezing primarily on BEV, but new files were shortly release to fix this issue, this was not only happening on VS but on other brands as well.
The support of VS cannot be even close to that of CS.
I've only played around with the VS Ultra, so I can't go into to much detail for the Platinum, but I am sure like the Ultra it's an excellet unit for the price.

viewsat has ecxellent support for all their stb's.
the platinum, xtreme, and ultra are basically the same but the ultra has a little more memory. the other 2 have the same program but it uses all the memory to run it.
the ultra also has a usb stick so you dont have to unhook it to get the files on it.
the platinum and xtreme have also been discontinued although support has not.
my advice is to go with the ultra for reasons stated above but if you want a plat it is a reliable stb.

you are making a good choice viewsat support is one of the best around look in to the viewsat ultra or the ultra lite none of vs receivers fall behind simply the best.

I think it's evident from the preceeding posts that VS has a wonderful - prompt support network and as regards the VS-PLAT/LITE I have been testing VS-PLAT a long time and this workhorse is one wonderful machine..very reliable..easy to set up if u don't mind dl the bin via null modem cable ..else u may raise d bar n go 4 the VS-ULTRA with ease of usb loading..ur call.. but VS the dependable product....
thanks all genius... one thing I found missing from VS Platinum Lite (may be other VS models too?), was that it DOES NOT have Anik-F3 (118.8W) sat in its default list. Adding it by hand is a painful process.
