Computer / applications Catagory
Don't know if this has been suggested before, but sure it must have been considered at one time. I do see it on some other sites. Given the relationship between computers and fta, I'm sure we have a powerhouse of untapped computer guru's who could solve many of the problems of newbies. Items could include non-fta related utilities, common comp. problems and fixes, applications for download, key generators, etc. Would make for interesting reading while waiting for bin fixes. Comments welcomed.

Thanks for the offer SoDark. I'm sure most would share their knowledge, tips, & shortcuts. The more support the better. Unless there would be a bandwidth issue with the added catagory.

Re: Computer / applications Catagory
I too would like to support this idea. I bet that there is more computer / hardware brain power here then we all know. A good catagory for sharing this information could only help. I for one could probably add some sort of info / help. (17 yrs comp/network/it tech support and schooling in industrial electronics)

Re: Computer / applications Catagory
I'll second the motion. Very good suggestion.
A side note:
I have been monitoring this and over a dozen other sites. The "suggestion box" here does seem more friendly. No one beaten up so far. Nice to see someone in power responding and paying attention to the suggestions.
Back to this thread:
This one could be at the top of the list of suggestions. In forums I have universally found lacking the the computer side of this adventure. We all need one to get files, get instructions, buy more equipment and share something. Most of what I have seen (not much) is PC (ie M$) centric. I know it is a shock to a lot of people, but some folks actually use something else! To be specific - UNIX based systems. I have a few. Work great. (OK - I'll leave that for a flaming forum later, and yes, I do have just one system capable of running M$ XP.)
I have been collecting utilities that work on non-M$ software. The problem is: no where to share them or the knowledge in the fta community without getting hammered by the pc fanatics (the few extremists).
So I will suggest the following hierarchy. Each forum has general postings at each level and a breakdown to sub forums based on software. Common information about computer hardware/software related upgrades and releases should be banned and let "versiontracker", or others handle it. Keep it fta related, only allow fta related information (eg serial/usb cables/drivers, pvr drives, video cards/software, ...).
Do NOT read anything into the order of topics, I have no subliminal message encrypted!
- Computer
- - General Information
- - - Microsoft (98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista) *
- - - Mac (Jaguar, Tiger, Leopard) *
- - - Linux (RedHat, SuSE, Gentoo, Slackware, Debian, ...) *
- - - Other (is there any?)
- - Help
- - - Microsoft
- - - Mac
- - - Linux
- - - Other (is there any?)
- - Files/Applications/Utilities **
- - - Microsoft
- - - Mac
- - - Linux
- - - Other (is there any?)
- - Hardware
* Sub forums as required/desired here and in the others
** In this forum I would really like to see links to the source site, not just a file posted. File posting I find very insecure, error prone and a waste of space.
I wrote a lot more than first intended but I guess that is the way it goes. This is my first post but I have been hanging around, reading for a while, thought I'd jump in an test the waters.
*** Remember: this is just a suggestion. Add, modify or delete, as you like, to improve.

Re: Computer / applications Catagory
Any fta website should have a general computer issues and help section...they almost go hand in hand. I'm sure that between all our shared knowledge it would be quite helpful to all members.

Re: Computer / applications Catagory
Well it seems that this has died a lonely death so I will let it go.
I cannot see posting Mac/Linux info throughout a PC oriented forum. Besides having to put up with all the flames, it would just get lost in all the other problems.
If the Admin's or Mod's want to reconsider, they know how to reach me by email.
I did find a few other sites open to doing this. See you there. A lot of stuff has been really good here.
thanx all.

Re: Computer / applications Catagory
Idea is not dead, anytime people have a computer or anything related question they can PM me and i will help them out to the best of my abilities. As for a tab section...would be a great idea...and it may come in the future hopefully.
