Site Access During Heavy Loads
Most of us want to get on and help others, or post new fixes and such.... A bit frustrating when we are unable to get on. So please excuse our frustrations, we are just here to help everyone. Sometimes our posts may be taken as rash or rude. Im sure that is not the intention.
If I have a problem with the site I try to post it in the Tech Issue section imediately so the Tech's may be able to get a jump on it before it all goes to the crapper.
So as we move forward some hickups will happen, but can the site go into a VIP mode that will cap the amount of users on during heavy loads.
Example.....
If there are 8000 VIP members set a cap @ 10,000. That leaves room for every VIP to have priority access and still leave a revolving door for unpaid members. The unpaid members could be allowed to view say 10-20 threads each time they log in before being bumped for another member trying to log on.
In the short term it would allow the tech's to readjust w/out being bombarded. As the site becomes available to more traffic, open up the doors to unpaid members bit by bit.
There are a ton of members that love the site and would probably pay if the VIP access was instilled to help the servers. A banner could go up telling unpaid users to choose the pages wisely because they only have the alloted navigation to find a fix or check status, or become VIP's for full access.
This way most people will not be left out and paid members are guaranteed the spot they paid for. Leaving the admin, mods and tech's some room to work unnoticed or bothered.
Thanks
Lonster

That's a really good idea, lonster. It would benefit everyone in the end.

Re: Site Access During Heavy Loads
I wonder what kind of results you'd get if you polled this as a question. "would you upgrade to VIP if it guaranteed site access during heavy traffic loads?" something like that

Re: Site Access During Heavy Loads
Some people dont seem to have problems while others do.... Im not sure why that would be, but the issue is more about VIP's not able to gain access.
I just thought there may be a better way so the least amount of people will be affected in the event of a huge load.

Re: Site Access During Heavy Loads
why don't you just make another site on a different sever for vip's only. and during ecm's that site get's the update's first. other's are doing this. say so much for vip access and so much for private sever access.

that's probably another good idea as well. lonster's idea and yours could both work well. from the server's perspective, i'm not sure which would be more efficient.
i think lonster's might be an easier approach, though. I say this because all it would require is a restriction tagged on each user account. that way, it would reduce the number of users on the servers, rather than redirecting all 300,000 users to different sectors of the (already bogged down) servers.

Re: Site Access During Heavy Loads
you not have to redirect everyone. just another site for the vip's let everyone else come here and bog down this sever and wait for new releases
