OK, I'm a noob and I don't have any kind of a setup yet; I'm still in the research stage.
But it seems to me like a motor would give me all kinds of satellites, versus just a couple for a fixed dish. Yeah, they might be crazed dictators ranting in some unintelligible language, but at least they would be different... for a while. Seriously, why isn't a motorized dish tthe universal solution? |

Re: Why doesn't everybody use a motor on their dish?
Believe me I had one, but where I live I am lucky that i'm getting anything with any of my dishes. I had one bought a brand new one but ending up selling it because of my location. Thats my reason or I would have one.
Also sorry forgot to welcome you aboard, please enjoy your stay here at ABA dss. Last edited by pulpworker; February 22nd, 2010 at 07:55 PM. Reason: Left Out Phrase |

Re: Why doesn't everybody use a motor on their dish?
Welcome aboard...motors add extra weight and are used mostly for dishes of 30 inches or more so its really not feasible to use it on say your standard Dish Pro dishes and such

Re: Why doesn't everybody use a motor on their dish?
Some elect to use motors, depending upon their budget and preference, others just use a big-ol-eliptical and LNB it to the 9's
![]() This unit (shown) utilizes a 'special' LNB mounting rig called a 'daucer' check out e-bay for details. Creative Genius

Re: Why doesn't everybody use a motor on their dish?
also,, fixed dishes are better for using on multi STB households,,
this way,, others can watch what sats they want,,depending on the amount of lnbs, dishes, and switches in the set up,,, |

Re: Why doesn't everybody use a motor on their dish?
You'll want to get a good Desq Switch, like the EMP-Centauri 8 to 1
![]() And as I understand it, having a Sat Meter may be handy for this set up. Creative Genius

Re: Why doesn't everybody use a motor on their dish?
like anything else you start any hobby small and work your way up
start off with a single satellite. then next thing ya know you end up with a sat farm. or you can go to one sat and a motor off the bat and save some money in the long run.

Re: Why doesn't everybody use a motor on their dish?
I have two sat 110,119 and two dishes and a Kbox. If it is a good investment at this moment with the problems with FTA?

Re: Why doesn't everybody use a motor on their dish?
Dish Elevation is a problem with using a motorized unit. I have one. When you are tapping into a satellite feed, the Latitude and Longitude on your dish will determine what angle you have to tilt the dish so your LNB can "see" the signal. The elevation of the dish will change with certain satellites, ie, Nimiq 1 and 2 are pretty much in the same Azimuth so its easier for the installers to line up the dish properly. While the motor works great for this application, if I wanted to watch programming on say, 110 or 119, I would have to go outside and raise the angle of the dish to a certain angle to get those satellites. The motor works great in some cases but a second motor which could raise and lower the dish angle would make me even lazier.LOL

a properly installed motor will line up perfectly for every satellite in the sky from eastern horizon to western horizon..... you should never have to go outside to make any kind of adjustments.....if you do, then you didnt install it properly to begin with..... my motorized dishes have been up for over 3 years and i have never had to go outside to adjust anything.....ive never touched them again..... |

on the negative side.....if you like to switch channels alot there can be some "lag time" while the motor moves the dish..... a motorized dish is really best for a single receiver setup.....if you want multiple receivers then you are better off going with stationary dish(es)..... i love my motorized dishes.....once you go motorized you will never go back..... |
