Newbie Preceed w/ Caution

Please bare with me as I learn how to get my FTA system up & running. I have some questions before I start wasting my money by purchasing the wrong equipment or equipment not needed.

1st- how to tell if the receiver is a clone or not (don't want to be on the wrong end of a scammer).

2nd-is it best to buy receiver online or try to find one locally (either retailer or craigslist)....are they even sold in walk-in retailers & online trustable site.

3rd- receivers offering quick file/update turn-around time (don't have to wait forever and a day to watch tv box goes out).

4th- receivers offering the best user/viewing experience & why you feel your choice is better than others (like ease of use such as programming & learning).

5th- was giving a DN 500 dish from a friend, will this dish work fine or should I consider investing into something else?

6th- currently using a Slimeline Dish (5 LNB's) with my satellite provider, is it safe to assume that this dish can't & won't be used in my quest to get FTA?

7th- I know this last one is a long short but worth asking anyway, anyone in the ATL that can assist me as well. I really don't want to give up on this by getting in over my head.

1-buy from a legit dealer to make sure it is not a clone

2-on-line or go to walk in dealer if one is near you as you can get many questions answered there and if you have any problems you know where to take it back. would also suggest to stay away from fleabay..etc..

3-viewsat ultra and sonicview 4000 are 2 good STB's with excellent support and easy to use with USB loading.

5-yes you can use that dish

6-?? not sure

7-what is ALT??

as for your #7

dont worry about giving up.we help so many novices here get up and running.sometimes it takes them just and hour or 2 even less sometimes.for their first time.
sometimes a week or so.but in the end.the members/site helpers/mods are right on top of things,and the site helpers are all so good.they wont give up until your up and running!

shady and i live the cw 600s premium.

want an easy setup? this one has auto diseqc switch.whats that mean?

it means when you go to set it up for your dish 500.it will automaticly set the settings if set to auto.
(you may have to turn on/off dish pro,you will learn that latter)
but its very simple!
then press a red button on the remote and watch it start pulling in over 600 channels right before your eyes lol in about 4-5 mins for both birds.
do a few more things.of course first you must load a 3rd party bin,but most of us of course dont watch the movie channels or all ppvs porn etc that some say they can.
but we hear its possible.hehehe

then of course support is great,when we get hit,fixes are out most often within 12 -24 hrs.
she's a screamer.tons of features.dont let that small price fool you.
i have some that cost over 150-200 and they dont hold a candle to her.
neosat ipro does though! if your into a cool pvr system!

lots of options.
check out the receiver reviews section,and see what you like.

before you buy though!
NEVER BUY A CLONE!
we will help you avoide that.
they are worthless junk.and then you have to wait for days! and days!
for a clone safe fix!
totaly not worth the mere 10-20 bucks you saved by buying one.

btw - who in the heck would want the ppv/movie channels, I'm really excited about the fta thing because I'm really into other countries tv station (hehehe).

Will I be able to hook more than one receiver up to the one DN 500 dish that I have? I'm looking at later getting 1 or 2 more receivers. But first I guess I'd better get the one dish I have now setup.

Your slimline dish will work with FTA including the LNB. Its just that it is hard to allign to get 5 lnb working. You only need 3 and you are good to go. Good Luck

Right now the slimline dish is currently in use with DAVE & is running strong, picking up their sats at 101, 110, 119, 99, 103(a). Is that all I have to do is hook up my FTA receiver. If so then how would that work because there's a hugh multi-switch between the slimline dish and all the DAVE receivers (6 total). Or do somehow I install a Diseqc somewhere, if so then where so that I can still use the other DAVE receivers with the FTA receiver.
