new keys vs. bin

I am very new to the FTA world and have a few questions. I read the "posting template" and will try my best. Also forgive me if I am asking questions that have been already answered. I tried to educate myself by reading many many past posts but most I do not understand because of the "terminology".

1. I have a viewsat platinum receiver but do not know what software or dish type I have. Is there a place in the receiver "setup" area I can find out or is this something only the person who sold me my set up would know?

2. Last week my network channels, PPV and porn were down and it was a "bin fix" that was needed. (THank you abadss for the bin download that restored all my channels)...this week my network channels are out again and I see that there are new keys posted. Do the new keys restore the channels I am missing right now or is that going to require a bin?

3. There are times when my box is working perfectly but I notice there are new sets of keys listed for dsh0101 (this is what I use). Do I need to insert the new keys for the wellbeing of my receiver even if I am having no problems?

Ans: You can find out what SW you are using in the receiver setup. Go to Menu/system information/receiver information and then you can see what software is currently loaded in your receiver. As far as the dish type, you will have to look at the dish and the lnbs to see what is marked on them. Search the forum for info on identifying your dish type and lnb.

Ans: At this time, we are waiting for a new bin to get the PPV etc channels. New keys will probably only open up the normal channels(not the PPV etc.). Currently with the new bin released a week ago, the auto roll function will take care of the keys. But for PPV etc. we are still waiting for the new bin.

3. There are times when my box is working perfectly but I notice there are new sets of keys listed for dsh0101 (this is what I use). Do I need to insert the new keys for the wellbeing of my receiver even if I am having no problems?

Ans: If you have the latest bin, the autoroll function will take care of rolling the keys for you. Sometimes when we are waiting for a new bin fix, updating the keys in your receiver will restore all channels. Currently with the issue we are having, new keys will not fix the problem. If everything is working okay, no need to enter the keys as they are automatically updated by the autoroll feature of the bin.
