Null or straight cable
I have a cs500 looking for a usb to 9 pin serial cable adaptor to download bins from my laptop witch cable do I need or will either work? What is the difference?

I think you meant the CS5000. In any case here are the cables that CS uses:
*The 4000 Plus uses a Null Data Cable
*The 4000 PRO uses a Straight Data Cable
*The 5000 Platinum uses a Straight Data Cable
*The 6000 Premium uses a Straight Data Cable
*The 7000 miCro PVR uses a Straight Data Cable
*The 8000HD uses a Null Data Cable
The difference between Straight and Null are not visible on the outside, but it's the way the that the inside wires are interconnected at each end.
So you need any USB-to-serial cable and you need the cable for your particular model and you are good to go. Here is how the USB-to-serial cables looks like.

yeah oddly most coolsats are about the only common stbs that still use straight through cables.
the null modem cables used by most others today have wires 2/3 crossed.
