Picture quality
Hello,
I am a bonafide newbie at FTA. I have never had dish or any other subscribed service, only antenna. I have a new HD Panasonic 720p plasma tv. I am looking at the sonicview HD8000 and the Elite 360 or others of that quality. I am wondering how I would get the broadcast channels after I buy the FTA box. Also, I wonder about the picture quality with the 360. I am thinking of planting a pole in the back yard to put the dish on and I will run the cables underground through conduit to the house. What size wires do I need to run for a dish motor. Are the motors ac or dc?
Thanks for the help.

Re: Picture quality
SV8000HD is Great for you HDTV 750p....And the Picture quality is like the Display in Bestbuy...About in Dish motor... If you are a professional installer go ahead. But for the newbie is a lot of headaches.

Welcome to ABA!! Enjoy your stay!
The easiest setup for FTA is to get yourself a Dish 100.2 with the LNB's associated with it. Then, you'll be able to point to birds 110, 119 and 129 (129 being your HD channels from DN). No motors, no mess! Here's a link to help provide support for the dish installation. Once that's installed, we can help you with your antenna settings and get you up and running. Enjoy!
PS - be sure to check out the threads in the Newbie's section. There's TONS of helpful stuff in there.

Re: Picture quality
in regards to the local channels, you will find many major market locals high up on the channel list. many variants of all the networks BUT you wont find all your local stations like you would on cable. you could always get an outdoor antenna or a basic cable hookup which would be good for the locals and TV when FTA is down.

Re: Picture quality
First off, IF you want HD service I would recommend the 8000hd(you will need a 8psk module to get hd) and in that case you would need ether 1 1000.2 dish(110,119,129) or 2 dish 500's(110,119,61.5). This is depending on your location, The reason is that in the eastern part of the U.S. cant hit 129 to good. So instead you will hit 61.5w(the reason for the extra dish). If you have to have a second dish you will need a DP34 switch, you can find them on ebay for about 30-40 dollars. You'll want to run RJ-6 coax cable with compression connectors. They are a litlle more expense and you'll need a specail tool, but well worth it in the long run(quailty and relaiblity). When installing your dish you'll want to keep your length of wire to a maximum of 200 feet from the dish to the receiver. Laslty you will need to update your account here at abadss to a vip status to get the files. Good Luck

Re: Picture quality
If you want to have a motorized dish your best bet would be 36' dish and I do believe that the motors are AC. Very nice for a single receiver setup.
By the way the SV-360 is a great receiver, specially if you only want regular(non hd). You will save alot of money.

Re: Picture quality
Thanks Guys,
I believe you have answered everything I needed at this point in my search. I plan to put the pipes and coax in the ground first so I will put an extra pull line or two for the wires. I am new to FTA but I am not new to building and technical stuff. Glad to know I need to figure for AC. It will make a difference in how I plan. I'll be back when I am further along.

The easiest motors to use are powered by the STB with no additional wires.
But if your pulling wires through the conduit, it would not hurt to have power out there. Welcome aboard too....
