how often will we need updates
I have been reading and searching several forums for about 2 weeks and no one no where is in a hurry to tell you how many times a year or month I might have to update???? am I the first one that would like to know ? cause I'm about to spend over 800 bucks for an HD box w/8psk board, 33" or 36" dish w/motor and inviacom lnb. plus setup tools, cables, switches, etc. from places that do not accept returns, are there any stats on how many times has it been down since 01-01-2008 and or last years 2007 total and what is the reality of down time, is it hours or days ?? thanks

Re: how often will we need updates
ok .. we call it testing and we don't know when we will take a hit. Usually most brands will be back up and running withing hours.
Your setup sounds great and I really won't worry about it.. sit back and enjoy it when your set up....

also if you upgrade your membership you can go back into the archives and take a look at how many times the new bins have come out.

Re: how often will we need updates
there is no way to know how many times a month you will go down. I have seen them go down every couple days and stay up for 4 to 5 months at a time. if you buy a setup with good support you will have nothing to worry about.

Re: how often will we need updates
most people use this as a test for this fta hobby and have a backup for tv like a sub .. as the guys are saying you can't tell how much you are going to be down but if you want a solid tv experience i say talk to a provider in your area .. this will not be for you .. not being a *** but this is the truth ..
with this you will go down and sometime for a while there also could be alot of downtime when nagra 3 hits (could be a month or longer ) who knows just want you to know whats up ..
now if you are still interested i say get a cheap reciever ..
viewsat ultra or a cw700-800 or a sonicview 4000 for 100-150 bucks and test have a back up and have fun learning the guys here are ther best to learn from

Re: how often will we need updates
thank you all ,but I must get an HD receiver as I own a sony 6ft lcd HDTV that 3 yrs ago cost 8k, the cost of the equipment is not a problem, I simply wanted an idea of how often I'll be walking my usb stick into the tv room. and upgrading to a vip membership without equipment is simply not practical. I will join this site [as I have been to several] when I have equipment, and first make sure it works out of the box including pvr function which many receivers seem to have problems with, I have no sub tv for over 2yrs now, so being down for a while doesn't scare me, I just wanted a ball park idea of what to expect. I currently rent and play dvd's from the video store which will also be my backup during down time. thanks again

Re: how often will we need updates
ok good deal there is always other tv you can get 123w you will need a 33 inch dish and a linear lnb for that and that never goes down harder to get but nice .. now as for the sv8000HD i have it and love it to death good choice ..
you can get a 18x24 in olptical dish and get 110,119 on it or get a large dish and a magic bar and pick up all on one dish ..
or you can get a large dish and a motor and get all more info but if you are serious about the hobby you will have a great time playing with it ..
now it can go down evey weeek and then some times it can be up for a month ,, as we say no way to tell what they are doing ..
now for a pvr i would get a external drive but not one with a sleep mode .. you can get a external case and put in a drive seperate and hoook up via usb mine is awesome .. then you can rip and copy the movies to the drive and watch on your sv8000( note: you have to convert to xvid with audio of ac3 or you will get video with no sound ) but i have over 200 movies on my 500gig drive i have slowly converted to xvid with ac3 audio ..
total converter is great for that we have it here .. if you want more ifo keep posting LOL
