There aren't any FTA STB's with internal HDD's. That's why most of them have a couple USB interfaces. One to update files and the other for the external HDD.

Has anyone tried to use the (SHAW) Motorola 160 gig PVR just as a PVR, not a receiver by running out of the back of a receiver??

There are several advantages to external hard drives for PVR:

* Drives generate a lot of heat -- don't need that in the STB

* Failed drive is trivial to replace

* You get to choose a size that suits your anticipated usage

* Much, much easier to transfer files to computer for conversion / recording

* If you don't need huge storage, you can use a USB stick instead -- even 32 Gb ones are affordable now (and much faster than HDD)
