Why even bother?
Not sure if this is the most suited place for this question, but other than throwing in a wrench into the mix every now and than, why do the providers even bother trying to stop the whole testing thing?
Think of the money that is spent by sending out new receivers, cards, changing actual sattelites and what not in an effort to stop people like us?
Obviouslly they try to pass on this expense to the consumers, but alot more people would probably subscribe to more channels if they were priced more reasonable.
I can certainly understand why they just don't sit back and do nothing, as than there would be no reason for anyone to subscribe, but out of all the testers out there, how many of them actually do not even have a minimum subscription?
Never done a poll before, here or anywhere else, but I'm curious to know how many people on here have a legit subscription?

Re: Why even bother?
I guess to awnser my own question and since I'm new to all this, I presently have a full Dish subscription with just HBO for the premiums.
Until last night I haven't touched my reg. receivers in two weeks. Pending any major interuptions I'll downgrade my reg. subscription, but plan on keeping it.

Re: Why even bother?
I had a dn sub for a while but found it utterly useless. I have managed to get free cable to run the tv's i dont have stb's for yet. it makes a nice backup also.

well technically speaking....loading third party software onto your reciever in an attempt to recieve/view encrypted satellite signals is basically stealing.....
these recievers are produced and sold to recieve clear FTA signals that are not encrypted and legal for anybody to view.....these recievers are NOT made to crack encrypted codes and that is why they are legal to produce, buy, and sell.....
when the companies are spending money to try to stop this, it is basically a cost of security just like any other business.....
you could say the same thing about an electronics store......"why does this electronics store spend all the money on high tech security cameras to catch theifs???.....why dont they just let the people steal instead of spending all that money on security???".....
well the reason why a business would not allow stealing is because eventually the stealing will put them out of business from losing money on merchandise.....
the same could be said for whats going on here.....if they didnt try to stop this then more and more people would cancel thier subs and buy an FTA reciever.....eventually that would put the providers out of business because they wouldnt have enough custmers left anymore......

Re: Why even bother?
I've got one word and one number that proves the want to axe the whole FTA market
Nagra 3... writing all new security encryption structure to thwart FTA...no real equipment swap needed, just new cards being sent by mail and easily installed by the consumer...crazy!!! check your FTA manufacturers home sites and ask coders if they are ready for NAG3... alot of cards have been shipped and they SHOULD be working on the un-encryption now...the only solid "YES" we have to NAG3 in the FTA world to my knowledge is V2, DR. t and the team of coders at NEo/NEUsat, the next few months should be very interesting.

well to put the OP question in simpler terms it would be......
"why do the satellite providers care that we steal from them?"
what company out there would approve of stealing??.....of course they are going to try to stop it.....they dont have a choice but to try to stop it.....
i dont know of any business or company that would allow or condone stealing......

Re: Why even bother?
I guess I didn't say what I meant as well as I could have.
It's certainly understandable they have to do a certain amount to prevent theft from Satellites they put in orbit, but to what point does it become counter productive.
Now sending different ECM's is one thing, putting whole new Satellites in orbit is another. Or whatever other counter measures are coming?
I'm a general manager for a small store, which I mainly run the sales accounts (yes I can do that and I do a pretty good job, even if I can's spell worth a sh*t).
Now I can hire security guards, have the little magnetic tags, security cameras the works in my store, but where do you end the spending? There's always going to be loss of some sort and believe it or not, employee theft is a bigger expense to 9/10 stores or businesses than other forms of theft.
Yes you do have to spend some money to save money, but I would guess that 2/3 of people doing what we're doing have a legit subscription to one of the providers. Yes, we'll watch more channels than we're paying for, but when it comes down to it how many hundreds of millions are being spent to prevent a small amount of theft?
I would bet that less than 5% of people watching Dish Network in the next week aren't paying for their service. Actually would be surprised if it was that high.

I don't hold much stock in Nagra 3....if man can make it....man can break INTO it. I have a basic cable sub but would never subscribe to Dn or Dtv.

Re: Why even bother?
I know several people that have a sub and also do FTA for the simple reason that pricing is just unreasonable. When a Wrestlemania event is around $50 to $65,who could blame anyone for having a FTA receiver.I agree with bald_raining,they broke Nagra 2 and I bet the coders are working on Nagra 3 as we speak.Only time will tell though.

the reason that pricing is so high is because of FTA.....if it was never possible to steal sat signals then pricing would be much lower
