Southern Ontario FTA dealers
Looking for recommendations on reputable FTA dealers in Southern Ont. (live in Cambridge area). If dealer sells Sonicview 8000 or new Nfusion Novenia(?), that would help

Re: Southern Ontario FTA dealers
Not sure if this helps but I have had great success with onesat in Alberta. Have ordered 2 systems from them. First 1 was short 1 - 3' RG6 cable and made a call and it was in my mail box 2 days later! Second system was for an in law and I screwed up and ordered a 3 lnb holder when I should have ordered a 4 lnb holder, they sent one out promptly no charge (not even shipping!). We live in MB. As a bonus most of there stuff ships no charge & only 1 tax + they ship COD via CDA Post so you have the unit in hand prior to paying. Each time I ordered price was below what cart said. As far as getting it modded I did it with info from this site. Not sure how many dealers will help with modding because of the risks involved, but if u have a buddy into FTA and use the web you should have no problems.
Take Care

Re: Southern Ontario FTA dealers
I live in SW Ontario myself, and when I decided to get into FTA I figured I needed a local contact because I was such a newbie. Unfortunately the only thing good about the three dealers I tried was the fact that if they had it on the shelf, I could take it home immediately. Without exception their lack of technical knowledge in such a highly-technical field was abhorrent, and I wound up wasting some bucks as a result. If I had to do it again, I would purchase by mail from an authorized dealer in the GTA.
(To be completely fair, part of the problem with these guys is that they don't want to appear knowledgeable because of the nature of the field. One guy, when I mentioned "91" to him, flat-out refused to talk to me any more!)

I posted a great thread about a dealer in toronto, that dishcharlie was kind enough to post for you as well. Check out Transat Electronics, or click on the link he posted in his response.

Re: Southern Ontario FTA dealers
Just read your helpful reply. Where do you live/ I am near Cambridge. Know a very knowledgeable dealer but they are confusing me, saying I can't get HD channels on Dish. Know anything about this? Are you happy with FTA. Getting BEV and DN both?
Regards
Cam,

Re: Southern Ontario FTA dealers
You need a extra add on for dn HD, the receiver will get bev without the extra addon mind you bev is playing games with that hd sat and channels are disappearing.

Just a little SW of you, W of Chatham. Here's some stuff that I learned from the good folks here at ABB, highly condensed for a quick read:
* What you buy / install depends almost totally on your preferences. HD or SD? PVR or no PVR? US / Can / International? Sports-nut / science-geek / news-devotee? There is lots for everybody.
* I chose to go with SD (pic is fantastic anyways, compared to off-air), and lots of PVR toys. Currently picking up DN and BEV, simultaneously. Love FTA -- I am one of those folks that loves the challenge as much as the results. I chose the SV 360 Elite and am completely happy with that choice.
* Pretty much everything my dealer(s) told me was rubbish (example: "you can't get DN and BEV together"). Everything that I learned here on the site was top-notch.
Enjoy the ride!

Re: Southern Ontario FTA dealers
Great info. Until yesterday, when I went to Brantford dealer, who knows everything, most dealers feed you BS ("can't get HD" on DN). Interested in HD, sports (Detroit Tigers), news. Have had Star Choice (paid sub with the basics) for all the times my Directv went down.
How long have you had FTA and how often has it gone down/
Nice to get a reply from someeone close to home - been in Chatham many times

Re: Southern Ontario FTA dealers
With wonderful feedback/input in the preceeding posts that also serves as a gr8 TESTIMONIAL to the folks here at ABA as being "TOP-NOTCH" are not only knwledgeable professionals to assist but much compassionate to help fellow members in very diverse manner on the subject with huge resource help section to take it to the next level folks..
Now as regards the down time in the FTA environment that's just unprediactable cuz that's the nature of the beast...if you look in to the dl section of the recievers and specially the one you get you will have a fair perspective to see the rotation and time lines regards the down episodes in the recent months and so forth..
Enjoy n hav a wonderful time -
welcome to the excitinf world of FTA.. ..

I only joined the world of FTA in July, after living with rabbit ears all my life. I suppose the upcoming changeover in February has a lot of folks wondering what to do (especially us Canucks -- lemme see now, US will be digital, but Canada will be analog...... hmmmmm....). Had a perfectly agonizing time getting it to work the first time, but now feel very comfortable with pretty much everything.
The DN/BEV combo has about 1,100 channels -- about 1,085 more than I had before. Oodles of sports for you and DIY for me..... Like just4ufolks said, outages are not at all predictable, but I have not found it to be aggravating -- it's a hobby after all. But I have noticed that the number of homes with dishes -- and multiple dishes -- has leaped in the last few months. No coincidence there......

Re: Southern Ontario FTA dealers
Another quick question. I enjoy getting your replies. How many "local" channels do you actually get?

BEV and DN have different ideas of "local". With BEV, it's more like "regional", but the advantages of time-shifted programming are all still there. A particular network program might be broadcast from Halifax, Toronto, Regina, and Vancouver -- all at different times.
DN has "real" locals -- especially useful if you want to see which muffler shop in your town is having a sale, or you like the local news coverage. Network affiliates and independents in dozens of cities are represented, but of course they are all US cities. All you do is pick the closest one to your location, or the one(s) that are relayed into your area. I use Detroit (roughly 7 channels); you might prefer Buffalo. Regardless of which you choose, you still get to take advantage of the cross-country time offsets from other cities.
