LNB ? - ku BEAM & C BEAM

Am I confused - you bet!

I understand that there are two type of lnb's

1. Circular LNB such as DN, Bell etc use and that is indicated by the L or R by the transponder.

2. Linear LNB which is indicated by an H or V by the transponder.

Now in looking for free to air channels on different satellites using the frequency charts at lyngsat I see that on some the "beam" on various tp's are listed as "c" sometimes C1, C2, C3 which indicate different areas of reception and also some where the beam is listed as "ku"

It seems that there are many more channels available that are listed as "c" beam then those listed as "ku" beam, i.e. Sat Mex 6 @ 113.8W.

I have 3 Circular Lnb's which I utilized for DN and Bell which apparently will not work for FTA channels and I have 1 Linear LNB that on the label indicates it is ku band which I have been using to try to tune in Galaxy 123W with no success thus far - Some in my small town in Baja CA have managed to tune it in barely using their old large skymex dishes which is what I also was using - I have the proper settings from dishpointer for my location but apparently just a slight wiggle of the dish and 123 is gone.

I was getting Bell on nimiq1 at 91w with no problem using Circular lnb. As an example Galaxy 17 at 91w indicates that it has free channels on tp1 3720H but the beam is indicated as "c" - so since the tp has a H for horizontal can I just put my Linear LNB which indicates it is "ku" band onto my already pointed dish for 91w and just set the skew (-35 deg) and get the available channels?

I guess what I am asking is besides there being two different lnbs circular and linear for the "ku band" as indicated in a sticky post in this forum are there also two seperate lnb's for the linear lnbs, "c" and "ku" band?

I've read most of the lnb threads here and they seem to deal with the difference between Circular and Linear lnbs which I understand but what about this c band and ku band thing?

I did note an advertisement for a combo lnb on another site as follows:

DMX741 C Ku LNBF "Can Pick Up Linear, Circular, C and Ku Band".

If I need yet another lnb would you recommend that I get such an animal that can pick up apparently all the various combinations or should I just get an lnb that is linear "c" band, if that is what indeed I need?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE! One more day of infomercials on DN ION TV network and I will probably end up a fulltime total babbeling idiot.

Re: LNB ? - ku BEAM & C BEAM

1.) circular lnb freq is 12250 dish size can be 18-30 inches
2.) linear lnb freq 10600-10750 dish size can be 30-what ever LOL
3.) cband lnb freq tx freq 5800-6725 rx 3400-4500 approc dish size 6 feet bud(big ugly dish) alot of people have modded out 42 inch or a bit larger to get the stronger cband freq with a good feed horn

here is a good read from bill about what he had done and see if this is something you would want to play with ..

Re: LNB ? - ku BEAM & C BEAM

Thanks tomcat01

Your right it is an awesome read with a tremendous amount of information!

Plan on rereading it a couple more times and go from there - Before I purchase any equipment have to decide if I want to try c band with my 1.2m dish or just obtain a bud which I can probably obtain the whole setup for free or just a few bucks as I noticed quite a few in numerous backyards around here that are no longer used.

Wonder how much a motor would cost to move one of those giants - I'm sure a little research will answer that ?

Thanks for the link it has really helped.
