Re: Is there a difference?
Pretty much all lnbs today are technically lnbf's, in the beginning they were LNBs but evolved into LNBF's but we just kept saying LNB.....but if you want to get real technical, the nerdy answer is..
LNB = Low Noise Block-down-converter
LNBF = Low Noise Block-down-converter + Feedhorn
and
LNBF has voltage control (13/18v) to change polarities while a LNB can't
A feedhorn is basically a metal funnel that guides the incoming signal to the actual antenna stub inside the throat of the LNB.

Re: Is there a difference?
I believe lnbf is what you want....thats what I have. Can anyone else here say they use lnb's instead of lnbf's......I'm under the impression that no one (90%) really uses plain lnbs any more.(hey NIW18...i would let this sit for a few hours so others have a chance to speak on this, some people have 10,15,20yrs experience...this is a good topic.)

What is the difference between LNB and LNBF?
In the early days of C band, the two most critical components of a satellite system were the downconverter and the LNA, or Low Noise Amplifier. The next generation of systems went from the single conversion downconverters to block downconversion. The LNA and block converter were joined either by a piece of low loss coax or an "N connector" coupler. A way to counter the loss between the LNA and the downconverter led to the joining of those two devices, called a Low Noise Block converter (LNB). A waveguide is a metal channel that "guides" the signal from the opening at the mouth of the feedhorn to the pickup probes in the throat of the LNB . Just like coax, waveguides can be lossy, so a way was developed to counter this loss by joining the LNB together with the feedhorn into a single Unit . This is what we know today as an LNBF , or Low Noise Block converter Feed.

Re: Is there a difference?
Using Legacy LNBs (2) of them for DN and B$V for close to 15yrs. Still going strong.

I just wanted to add that ACRadio is a pioneer satellite reception expert who sold and serviced systems before many of you were conceived as babies. My highest regards to you, ACRadio.
