Legacy, DP and DPP Equipment Power Requirements What you need to know

c/p

Folks,
In an effort to better understand and provide the correct information I have gone ahead and gathered the power requirements and supplies of Charlies equipement.

As you know both lnbs and switches require certain power (current and voltage) in order to operate. We know that legacy dn equipment traditionally has lower power requirements, than dishpro. Now with dishpro plus there is even more power that it is required.

Legacy Equipment Power Requirements:

Legacy Dual Lnb: According to Standard IEC-1319, Single band or dual band lnbf require (11.5 to 19 V) and up to 300 mA to power the built in polarization switch. A vertical tp is selected using 11.5-14V and the h tps using 16-19V. To account for voltage drop (0-1V) between lnb and receiver, the receivers are required to operate betwen 12.5-14V for lower band and between 17-19V for the higher band. So the manufacturers usually just quote the nominal value of 13V for V and 18V for H tps.

Legacy Twin/Quad Lnb: Here I dont have a solid reference for how much comsumption the legacy twin requies. We do know that dn legacy ird put out 13V/18V and 400 mA so my take is that a legacy twin or quad can work with 400mA supply.

Legacy SW44 and SW64 : The ac transformer shows 24V and 1000 mA according to satelliteguys post. [EDIT]

Dishpro Power Requirements:

Single Dp Lnb: From sonora design specs it is quoted that a dp single lnb will draw bout 185mA and we know that DN quotes their equipment can work in the range of 10v-19V.

Dual Dp LNB: According to sonora design a dp dual can draw 365 mA (which is about twice as a dp single).Again the voltage range is 10-19V

DP twin/Quad: Here i dont have exact numbers but we know that the dp twin has 2 built in diseqc switches.A typical value for a diseqc switch is between 25-30mA so I would say that a dptwin will draw something like 365+30 = 390 mA which most fta boxes can supply, see below.Again the voltage range is 10-19V

DP 34 switch: This switch is powered by the receivers. According to sonora design, the dp34 has a built in current sensor that will allow up to 365mA. I believe this is a requirement per sat port and not for total requirement. As minimum a dp34 must be able to power 3 dp singles simultaneously so that woud mean 3x 185 mA = 555 mA minimum. This why a legacy dn ird is not enough to power this switch. Again the voltage range is 10-19V. A dn dp ird will always put out 18V if it detects that dp equipement is used.

DPP twin : We know that this lnb can be a power hug.According to hxxp://www.appliedin.com/signallevelmeters/superbuddyspec.html a 600mA supply is enough to drive the 3 lnb dpp twin setup. We know that dp and dpp ird put out 750 mA of current so I am not surprised here. However fta boxes only supply max of 500mA so this is why in some cases, FTA boxes cant feed the power required by the 3rd lnb setup.Notice that the operation of the dpp twin without the lnb in port may draw much less power (like a dp twin).

DPP 44 : The requirements come from the power supply that comes with the unit: 1650 mA and 20.5 V. So this is more than 2 dp ird (2 x 750 is 1500 mA).Also notice that to power 4 dp singles simultaneusly woud required 4x 185mA = 740mA minimum plus whatever current required to power the switch itself so even a dn dp ird wont be able to power a dpp44 switch.

Legacy DN IRD power IF power output:

The 2700 dn IRD puts out 13/18V and 400 mA.

Dishpro Adapter for Legacy ird:

20V and 750 mA This has been verified.

DP and DPP DN IRD power IF output:

13V/18V for legacy lnbs and 19V for dp equipemtn, 750 mA

Seletected FTA receivers power IF output:

Coolsat 6000: 13/18V and 400 mA
Pansat 3500: 13V/18V and 500 mA
Viewsat : 13V/18V and 500 mA

Note that one key difference is that the dn ird knows (via bidirectional 2.0 diseqc commands) whether the lnbs are legacy or dp and will supply the appropriate voltage. I dont think fta boxes do that: the only thing that has been done is to do the conversion at the h tps (the dn tps are revesersed so the equation v tp = 25600 - h tp is used) BUT more importantly the fta boxes send the request at 13 V (since it is thinking all tps are in the v freq) if you select the dishpro setting. This maybe where problem with feeding enough voltage and current to the dp34 may come in.If you account for losses in the cable then by the time it gets to the switch perhaps too much has been lost and not even a 10V is received. Perhaps a better solution would be to convert all tps to the h freq band and then let the fta boxe use only this band when using a dp34 switch that way the receiver will be outputing the correct voltage the switch expects (18V).
