Newbie wants to get into... testing keys.
I posted this in the wrong place last night (I hope that's why I've gotten no advice). Maybe I'm asking inappropriately or incoherently. Here's another try:
Okay. I'm looking to purchase the equipment necessary to test keys - the equipment should be the easiest to set up, use, upload to, etc. I have an "old" Sony 36" XBR which has component HD and DVI connections and I have a regular TV, so I'd like to get two sets set up for testing.
I have a 2m ChannelMaster dish I was using for DN until I ran 'em off for jackin' prices during my initial year-long contract, so I guess it's aimed properly (at least for DN). Two cables run to the house from a DSS LNB , BSNA5-218A to a Microyal model 3104, 4-way satellite multi switch then to the TV's. If any of this equipment needs to be tossed, fine.
I have a Windows XP PC driving the Sony TV with component HD from Blu-ray disks and downloads. I put some hot tamale video card in it and it rocks, although in 16:9 mode only (set is a beautiful 4:3 unit).
What should I buy to get into testing?

Re: Newbie wants to get into... testing keys.
bump. Is this question moot? In the wrong form? In the wrong forum? So badly written as to be unintelligible? Let me know where to read the answers if there's a place on this or another site, please.
Thanks.

Re: Newbie wants to get into... testing keys.
Hey jellyb,
What would be the purpose on testing keys? I guess i say that because before the major map change the keys were just not helping as far as if there was a key change then we were able to enter keys manually until new file was availible. I am not an expert on this but like I asked , what woud you test keys for? Maybe that why noone has responde to your thread. Hopefully with my semi answer someone else like a mod would jump in and answer this.

Re: Newbie wants to get into... testing keys.
I was being coy. Substitue "use" for "test." I really just want to use the dish to watch TV. Does that improve the post? What should I purchase, given what I have already, to get a feed from a satellite.

Re: Newbie wants to get into... testing keys.
OK. You say you are already wired. YOu only have one LNB. And you say you want the easiest set up. One LNB is not going to work to get all of D#sh. I have a dish 500 with a quad LNB. It doesn't need a switch and you can hook up 4 STBs. You may want to cruise the forum and look under dish/LNB set ups. This will give you just about any and every option you can think of. Like I said I started with a poor mans' dish and found the Dishpro 500/quad a dream to work with. Istallatios is easy. Good luck and keep us posted. And again maybe someone else would put their 2 cents worth on this subject.

being a newbie,, buy a nfusion stb,, 18x24 eliptical dish with 3 dual lnbs,, couple diseqc switches,,i would advise u to buy a roll of good RG6 cable,, i bought ends and a crimper and make my own cables,, get the nfusion up and running,,see if u like it,, then shop for a good HD receiver once u know what ur doing,,,,

Re: Newbie wants to get into... testing keys.
I agree with Johnny but I would look around for a STB thats right for you. Nfusion isnt known for their top notch picture quality and maybe you might want something HD or with a PVR theres a lotta options out there. If you have used this dish in the past for DN then it should still work but without more than one LNB you wont be able to recieve all of the channels (as was previously stated). Good luck and have fun!

well you have a great dish for fta.if you where interested, you could get a motor and an invacom qaud lnb.this will get you all kinds of channels.
if you plan on running both stbs at the same time, you may just want to hang another dish,at least for one of the stbs.
you may want to check into the catain 8000hd. (mpeg2hd only)
and also check out the sonicview 8000hd.(mpeg2/4 hd with add on)
whatever fits your budget best.
next, you will want to look into a standard stb.there are all kinds.would need to know if you would want pvr or not,or what other kind of options/features best interest you for that one.such as iks/pvr etc etc.
but theres a few things to ponder.
be sure to check out the receiver reviews section, and see what you like.

Re: Newbie wants to get into... testing keys.
I guess the reason this house came with such a nice antenna is our latitude (north of 60). I see a lot of the smaller dishes around but have heard the snow/rain can interfere. These dishes are pointed at the ground, so I guess the satellites are equatorial orbits or nearly so. I'm gonna get a standard definition with pvr, I guess, for the time being. I'll run new RG6 from the quad LNB (bypassing the switch as the gordito recommends). A motor seems like a risky purchase for me. I'm in the path of some serious, serious winds from the south (gusts to 90 are routine through the winter months - 7 months of the year). This antenna is planted in what must be a major clump of concrete. I'll keep an eye peeled for another member in the great state of AK and see if they're having luck with small eliptical dish. In the mean time, I'll buy a standard pvr, lnb, cable, terminators and see if I have any luck. Thanks.
