Distance of LNB from Dish????

I have a Hughes Net Internet dish mounted on my house. It has a what i guess is a transmit and receive sat lnb. In a different post someone said this would make a great FTA dish. I think it would as well as it has a really nice mounting pole and supports already set up on the house. The only issue/question i have is the centering, distance, position of my Super Dish quad DN LNB. I have the dual yoke which mounts to a square lnb arm. What now??? Thanks.

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

you would have to attach it some how but to me it would just be easier to go to a yard sale and pick up a dish 500.

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

Well i am a mechanical contractor and a carpenter for 15 yrs before that so attaching it is not an issue as i have access to all materials and tools needed to fab up what i would need. The real question is the positioning of the lnb??? More importantly the distance it is away from the dish.

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

likely the lnb face would have to be the same distance that it was when it only held the single LNB on the hughs setup. i dont know if that dish has a skew adjustment but if it does not you will have further issues since some sats are a bit higher than others and you have to skew the dish when you have 2 or more lnbs attached in most cases.

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

I have the DN 1000 quad LNB to pick up 110 & 119. The Hughes LNB is alot further away from the dish than any DN setup i have seen. Probably twice the distance.

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

maybe the distance is different due to the fact that the dish is also being used for transmitting signal up. if the dn 1000 is the same size then likely you are right in the distance. the 1000 should be able to get 3 sats or even 4 depending on what version you have.

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

Thanks Creativegenius!!! So if just measure the distance of the LNB to the dish on my DTV dish, mount my DN LNB at the same distance using the arm from my Hughes Net dish i should be all set, correct??

thats not nessessarily true.....this would depend on the angle of the dish arm itself....you need to locate the focal point of the dish and then cut the arm so the lnb(s) is aiming directly at the focal point.....

Do you have a sat.signal meter ?
I'm thinkin' you could hook er up to a signal meter and just slide the lnb down the arm 'till she sqeals like a pig...then just mark it off there...and fabricate what you need then to fit the mark...I could be wrong but it sounds good in my head...

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

Well if i take into account what bill said about the focal point of the dish i was thinking this...the existing Hughes Net LNB is already pointing at the focal point so i would just have to mount the DN LNB at the same angle. Then use your idea of sliding towards the dish using the signal meter to find the correct distance.

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

This is a good dish. In Fact i have an 18" round DTV, and an elliptical DTV(like DN 1000) that i could easily use. I was under the impression that the larger the dish the better the signal i get. Plus with it being elliptical i can skew it to pick up 4 or more birds. Not to mention it is on an awesome mount that has a built-in compass.

Why would i buy a new dish when i have 3 that will work fine with a little input from other helpful members in the forum??

what sats are you trying to get????

and yes, you should measure exactly where the exsisting LNB is aimed at the dish.....put a little dot with a marker there......then that will be the spot you need to aim your new LNB(s).....

if you are slightly off that spot then you want the LNB(s) to be aimed slightly LOWER than the mark.....if you are higher than the mark on the dish you will have signal and q problems......basically being a bit lower on the dish is much better than being higher......

Re: Distance of LNB from Dish????

Hey wgknappy:

Ahhhhh it good to see a bit of humor in these forums from time to time, everyone is usually so serious <grin>. Not today I see!

The old Hughes dishes are great, there are nice and big ... so you can easily mount 5 LNB's or so on there - no problem.

What you'll want to do is determine the focal length, which in turn will help you determine the length that the arm has to be given the LNB's you'll be using.

1) f/ D ratio (precise distance or focal length from centre of dish)

2) Offset of the LNB (degree of rotation),

Setting No 1 (The focal length)

The focal length is the distance from the deepest point in the center of the dish to
the front of the feedhorn on the LNB.

For technical specialists:
Refer to the instructions for your dish to obtain the correcfocal length.
If you do not instructions, you may need to rely on the formula below:
Where D = diameter of dish, d=depth of dish (measured in the center from the face to deepest point).
Use a piece of string drawn tightly across the center of the face from one rim to the opposite rim to get an accurate face position.

The focal length is = f
The formula is: f = D x D / 16 x d.
Example: D = 2.3m and d = 0.375m. f = 2.3 x 2.3 / 16 x 0.375= 5.29/6 = 0.882m
