Re: Windows 7 Upgrade
I have a copy on the way, I will gladly upgrade to get rid of vista...... My copy is a free upgrade becuse I bought a new laptop at the right time, but I would never pay the outrageous prices Microsuck wants for their OS's without it being proven first. The Vista fiasco was/is a mess.... Why pay for something that sucks and forces you to upgrade your whole system to gain an OS that has got to be the most unstable POS OS ever released...... I hope Win7 is twice the OS that Vista is.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade
I've had the beta verison from Microsoft for about 3 months now. I am a beta tester and I should be getting the full version soon, this week sometime. It's great and alot fast and the fastest yet. But, I'm running it on a quad-core with 16gb of Ram too. Just check it out and see what you think.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate.
I have been running the RTM (beta) version for a bit over 4 months.
I like it a LOT!!
It is nothing like Vista. (boo hiss yuck)
They seemed to have consolidated some of the steps, so that there are fewer of them. You can now have multiple windows displayed all at once on your desktop, instead of just tabbed, which is still available.
It is faster, I think and much smoother. I have yet to crash it or lock it up, and believe me, I *HAVE* tried!!
My slowest machine is a 4 year old DELL Laptop, with a 1.6 Celeron and 1 GB of RAM. It runs as good on that as it does my newer machines, aside from some differences in speed, it is still no slouch.
All of my programs and games work just fine. I actually got a better FPS and resolution using Windows 7 than I had using XP.
The *only* thing I can say that is a PITA, is you can not upgrade from XP. You have to format to install, however from Vista, you can simply upgrade. Fresh install is always better anyhow, IMO.
In my opinion, you could not go wrong with getting Windows 7, any of the versions. Windows 7 Home would most likely be everything that most users would ever need.
It is better laid out, easier to navigate and simply easier to use, especially if you are not that computer savvy. If you are a Pro, you will like the ways that things have been streamlined, and you will wonder why it took them so long!!
I hope that helps you !!

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade
Win 7 sounds OK. I do not like the info that you can not upgrade from XP. Funny thing about Vista: If you ask 10,000 users what they think about Vista, you would more than likely get 9,999 of them that think it is pure junk. The odd thing is I have Vista on one of my laptops. My Acer has it and I really have to say it has given me very little trouble. I found no real reason to remove or change it to something else.
I hope Win 7 is stable 'cuz XP can give you problems now and then. It is what I have on all my other machines, except my home server.
Time will tell. . . .

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade
Im currently running Windows 7 ultimate rtm 7600 in dual boot configuration and it seems to be quite stable and fast. As others have mentioned the driver support is the best to date of any windows os. I did not need to load any chipset drivers, pci bus, pci graphics card etc.. just loading windows 7 i had no exclamations in the device manager which is very useful for a novice. As well the interface is clean and easy to navigate with better expansion options in the control panel. I would say over all it is a huge step in the right direction and anyone who has vista should not be hesitant to upgrade.

I am a long time Linux OS user. But it seems that you almost have to have Windows for many programs. Wine is unable to run many programs that use .net 2.0, so that forces you to get Virtualbox or VMware. I also agree with you, Linux is way better, Faster, Leaner and more stable than ANY other OS. OSX can not even come close.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade
Linux is nice, but unfortunately it can be very difficult for people to use. Unless you have a very broad, and in depth knowledge of they way things work, it's just not ready for the mainstream or the majority of people to use.
If you are not a pro, its not for you. But I agree with you guys, Linux OS's are nice and do work well.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade
Keeping with Ubuntu for the time being. I've gone nearly 7 years w/o giving Microsuck a dollar, and intend to keep it that way.
lonster is right...unless you have a broad knowledge of Ubuntu (or Linux apps), it can be a pain. But, my family and I use it for internet and very basic other uses. Just can't justify paying for an OS. Ubuntu is nice because if we don't like this certain application software, we ask for a better app on a forum, and we'll get a dozen or so opinions with source code for easy install. Can't beat it.

Yup. You hit the nail right square on the head! My Asus netbook came with a version of Linux so I "played" with it for some time. Worked great, but anytime you wanted to change anything, you had to go to the command prompt. Reminds me of computing way back in the dark ages of 1980's with my first machine. Way too much work.
I would consider the 7 upgrade if you could upgrade from XP. Guess that is the first "problem" with Win 7.

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade
My son works for a "LARGE" computer company and he had his hands on Windows 7 back in April. He hasn't had any trouble with it. He installed it here for us and has been working great for all I do.
