I put my Neusat 6000 P to work....
I'm still fairly new to the whole satellite game. When I was first considering getting involved, I decided to play it safe and purchase the cheapest receiver and dish I could find. That way, if none of it worked, I could just throw it away and move on with my life. I purchased a Neusat 6000 Premium (I was so excited!)
Well, much to my surprise, it did work. For an entire day. And then they released an ECM. So, I waited.. and waited.. and waited... And nothing was ever released for Neusat. So, I put my new toy in the closet and purchased a few Captiveworks receivers, which work great. (But thats beside the point).
That being said, on with the story...
I'm fortunate enough to work from home. I'm a consultant and have my own company. For my company I have a PBX (a telephone system). It has 4 lines and 10 phones. It serves me well. Its an old AT&T Merlin 410, cost me about 20$ on ebay.
(I do have a point, I promise.)
I recently purchased a hold music module for my PBX, allowing me to have music when my callers are on hold. Once I installed the module I needed a source for hold music. Many options came to mind, setting up a PC to stream music off the 'net, or getting a cheap CD player to repeat a few mp3s, or an old mp3 player of some sort....
Then I had the idea to put an FTA receiver in there and stream OZ FM or some station from Saskatoon, to really freak my callers out... then I got to thinking what a headache that might be when the ECMs are released and the keys change and whatnot with updating the receiver. Plus I'd have to buy another receiver, and hook some kind of television to it.
Then I discovered that there are 2 (real FTA) music channels on Echostar 8/10, SING and SINGV. So I took my old Neusat receiver from the closet and blew the dust off of it. I hooked it to an extra port on my 4 port LNB and I'm in business. Free hold music. And the music isn't THAT bad.
I'm not sure if my creative use of my old receiver will work in everyone's case, but if you're ever in the need for free "muzak" and have a free port on your LNB, the Neusat works great -- It's almost like it was made for this.
(I'm pretty sure SING and SINGV are used for some sort of background music on DN, perhaps during the guide... Not sure)

Re: I put my Neusat 6000 P to work....
there are all kinds of free music channels all free and clear.
along with many tv channels as well.
when you find the time, you should check out this section.
that neusat can live on for many years.
the hobby is much bigger than the two big providers.even they don't have many of the things you can find elsewhere in the sky.

Like I said, I'm new, but it's my understanding that I would need a bigger/different dish to receive anything other than bev/dn.
