what is IKS? is it right for you? & what units currently support IKS?

(work in progress sticky.keep checking back from time to time.)

iks= Internet Key Sharing.

c/p by skygrabber (altered to fit this guide for basic stbs running iks):
WHAT IS IKS?- brief explanation

IKS is a backup system revolution for fta.It was brought to us thanks to the knowledge of coders like V2 and Dr T.

Basically it is a system that via the internet sends the information you need to open a channel and view it.

You must have your receiver hooked up to an "always on" internet connection, the most common of which is cable or dsl.

You can connect the stb to a router via a lan patch cable if your tv is near your cable modem and router. The other choice is to have wireless router and purchase a wireless Ethernet bridge (do a search on amazon for these words and you should find several models there). Your router should be setup to run DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) which assigns ip and other pertinent information to pcs and other internet devices so they can get on the internet.

If you set this up properly, then you should be able to get tv using the IKS system.
end c/p

iks can and does go down, but it can be brought back up in minutes at times where files may take hours or days.
........................................

is iks for you?

first you need to understand the risks of hooking your receiver to the internet to receive information.

there is,and probably always will be the on going debate as to if running iks is safe or not.the bottom line is,its up to YOU to decide, and with a continued receiver base adding iks,you can bet there will be plenty of shared wisdom on iks and your security on the forums.it will be up to YOU,to decide what is fact, what is fiction, and the risks involved with iks and you.

secondly,do you have an always open "devoted" internet connection?
when files are down, iks may keep you up and running.but of course only if connected to the internet.

what receivers currently support iks and do they also have regular file support (cardless) so you can simply just use files if you wanted also?

Tessat & nfusion nova -no steady cardless support.

neosat ipro 2000/neosat ipro plus/neosat pro (w/adapter) (all are pvr models) -steady cardless support.

captain 7000 (with adapter)-steady cardless support.

captain 7100 (with adapter)-steady cardless support.

captain 8000HD (with adapter)-steady cardless support.

what are some basic qualities/advantages between iks supported units?

nfusion nova= ALL channels up via iks.and very steady and stable.
its been running iks the longest.honestly its the current king of iks to date.
but its hardware it limited, many reports of dp lnbs not the best option with these (only 400ma of lnb power is why)also another common complaint is picture quality is lower and some say outright poor.they did introduce a software pvr system, but many find poor results and simply do not use it.
overall, many simply use this unit as a backup solution with another newer basic unit.

overall nfusion novas best quality: overall currently best iks runner.
set it up and forget it,and watching tv via iks will little else to do.
************************************************** ****

neosat 2k= many supported channels on iks, since it has good file support, iks is pretty much just used as backup when you need it.otherwise just run the files.iks is being worked on for advancement now.
where this unit shines is superior hardware and superior pic quality.and an advanced easy to use pvr system.where it lacks is some missing software, such as no favorites in epg mode and lacks advanced channel editing options.otherwise a very smooth and extremely fast unit with sat scans speeds of around 30 seconds.

overall neosat ipro's best quality: pvr/pic quality/nice hardware.iks and cardless support.
1 file runs both cardless and iks.

************************************************** ***

captains= lower priced, but still high quality Korean made units.
these units also have superior picture quality over many units as well.the iks system is brand new but said to have:
around 1,300
supported channels
such as ppv's etc on dn and bev.many advanced features and nice channel editing options.captains currently have no pvr options.only missing some minor software advancements tweaks here and there.otherwise very fast and smooth running units as well.the captains are simply the easiest to use fta units on the market with one button setup feature.
you will need to change files for running iks OR cardless.
there are some reports of reboots running captains currently from time to time, mainly with the 8kHD unit.
you will need an additional adapter called a dongle to connect the captain to the internet for iks.
overall captains best quality: low price, very advanced software and features along with high pic quality, both iks and cardless support.one button setup.
and of course, currently the ONLY iks supported HD unit.

examine all receivers for full reviews in the receiver review section for many in depth details for each.
take 0% of what is written as fact.do your own research please!!!! 1 persons research may vary from yours! this is a guideline only!
