Reputation Points
Ok everyone, we are going to begin to utilize the Reputation system here.
What is it?
This function of the forum allows users that participate most and have been here the longest the opportunity to endorse or not endorse a person or a persons posts. This is not a way to judge other people, this is a way for newbies to tell who is giving quality advice and who may not be. This is also a way for users to let those who help them out the most know about it. This is by no means the only factor determining how helpful a person is, but it is an at glance way to check things out.
How the system works.
I am going to use Carpenter1 for an example on this for consistency.
If you look at the Rep Power Section above. Reputation works in two ways. 1) The amount of reputation points someone has
2) The amount someone can alter someone's reputation
Carp has 7 Reputation Altering Points. What this means is that any time Carp leaves a reputation for someone he gives them 7 points. This is his Reputation Altering Power. You can give or take away reputation points
Reputation is not 1 for 1. Like if someone gives you a reputation point, your reputation level will not immediately increase by 1. There is a leveled system. I am not going to give out the scale because i don't want this to become a competition. But for example, every 100 reputations points you receive, you go up one reputation level. Carp has 2 blocks now so he is on the second reputation level. This is not to say that Carp isn't helpful, just that it takes a while to get reputation and it is not doled out lightly.
How to Get it
Different things affect your Reputation altering power. How long you have been a member, the amount of posts you have, how much reputation you have been given by others.
For example Carpenter1, has 4177 posts and has been a member since January of 2005. When he sees that someone has done a great job posting or has been helpful, he can click on the little scale by the persons name and he can leave a reputation point and a comment for the user. His reputation points for that user will count for more than someone who only has 50 posts and signed up in Jan 2006.
The more posts you make and the longer you have been a member of the forum, the more your points will count for.
Cheating
There are only a million safeguards built into this system so cheating should not really be an issue. Like you can only give so many rep points to a person in one day, you can only give so many reputation points period in a 24 hour period. How often you can give reputation points. How many posts you must have before your rep points will count, how long you must be a member before your rep points will count, etc
Do NOT use this as some sort of popularity contest. Just give someone reputation points when they have been helpful to you or you notice them really helping out the forum or someone else. Not just because they said something funny or because they have a cool user pic.
Keep in mind that if you are a jerk to other members, advertise other sites, etc etc, you can have rep points taken away as well.
Conclusion
I know it is sorta complicated, and that is why it wasn't really implemented before. But basically, the longer you have been a member and the more you post the more it will count when you give someone else reputation. Again this is not really a competition so i don't want to make the reputation easy to get.
This post and explanation should help everyone understand how this works and increase everyone's participation in the reputation system.

Thanks Mr.Burns
Hey Bossman: I understand now better how this works. I didn't mean to be complaining or blowing my own horn. I just thought after giving a rep to somebody , I would see the number get bigger...it didn't...so was wondering if it worked at all.
Personally...I like the Shiney Gold Stars under my name a lot more than a number. LOL
Seriously...I just am here to help others. I spend more time on this site than I do watching TV...Oh well.
Thanks for making it all possible for us out here! SatelliteJunkie

not a problem, it is a confusing system at first and there is no easy way to explain it. So i had to do it anyway.
The gold starts are commensurate with your posts.

Public Info
I wonder if you could revise that info & post it for all 33K members to read too. I'm sure if I didn't understand...there are thousands of others who don't either. Then it can be used as it was intended. Thanks again for the info! SatelliteJunkie

Just give good advice. People will give you the rep power. I post very seldomly, since others do have good advice also.
Thanks Admindv for the explanation!

I like the rep power idea! It provides some reliability and consistency to what you are reading.
I, however, rarely post unless I see numerous requests for something going wrong that a lot of users need help with. I have helped Moderators at times when they have been stuck for answers. I just hope in my scenario that my lack of running my gums will give me less rep power!? (Notice my doughnut)
It seems also the rep system could use a method of somehow weighting replies as it relates to rep numbers, as an all positive buildup could inflate yackers to "FTA God" status.
Also, does admindv really deserve a 10?? For?? (LOL, kidding...)
Yet, like I stated, I still like this new concept. We'll see how it goes!!

The rep system is not for Yackers...it is for Helpers. There is a big difference. I do not give reps for idle chit chat. Only people who work hard & deserve recognition. If you rise to God status...you earned it!

There are numerous safegaurds in place to ensure that people who just post nonsense do not get a ton of rep points. Carp has 4000 nonsense posts and about 100 that actually help people and he only has 9 reputation altering points
Keep in mind too that reputation points are different from reputation altering points.
