Advanced channel list editing with Channel Master

C/P

One of the issues I faced with autoscanned lists is abbreviated channel names and a ton of useless test or duplicate channels.

I was tempted to edit every Channel name and create a master list but it would be very time consuming. It also would be wasted if I needed to re-create a list using an autoscan.

What I did was create a template for use with Channel Master. This template was extracted from Lyngsat and imported into Excel. I cleaned up the channel names using the search and replace function to remove all the "Channel, TV, Network, etc." entries. This gave me a clean template with nice, short, and descriptive channel names.

There are 2 excellent ways to use this template.

The first is to use it to rename all your channels with the full Channel name. This will NOT add, delete, or modify your channel list in any other way. It will only look for a sat/sid match then apply the full channel name to your existing channels.

Load your channel list, then select Tools, Apply Template

You will be promted for the file. Browse to the file location and select open.

A new prompt will come up:

Select ok and you are done. Check all your channel names and you will see you have all the full official channel names!

The second way you can use it is to auto edit your autoscanned list. Repeat the procedure but select the "Delete channels that are not in the template"

This will delete all the channels that are not in the template and produce a nice official channel list, saving you a ton of editing. You can also edit the template itself to refelct your own preferences.

I have attached the source Excel channel list files. Below is a step by step guide to using Excel to extract Lyngsat data.

1. Open Excel.
2. Click in the cell where you'd like your data to start.
3. Click on the Data menu and choose "Get External Data".
4. Choose "New Web Query".
5. In the address box, type the URL of the Web page where your data is found. I just went to the Lyngsat page I needed and copy pasted the URL.
6. The web page will be displayed in the box and all the tables will be identified by a yellow box with a black arrow pointing at the beginning of the table
7. Examine the page and click in the boxes that mark the tables you need. The box will become green with a black check mark.
8. Click on "Import" on the bottom right of the frame and off you go!

Now you will need to create the template.

1) Open channel master and load any old list
2) Click on Tools, "Create Template"
3) In the export box select only "Export Channel Names" and "Export Names"
4) This will create an excel compatible .csv file.
5) Now examine the file you created in Excel.
6) Open another window in Excel and load the file you created from the Lyngsat data.
7) Edit the data so that it macthes the data format in the template you created.
8) Now paste the data from your Lyngsat list into the template.
9) Save the template in CSV format and you are all done!

How to create your own Custom List

Updated. New template 10/03/06. MT/DVB-friendly version maintained.
Since the recent changes in channels/transponder locations- I wanted to find a better way to create my own custom list without having to manually input every channel. I've spent the past month creating a template which all can use to make their own lists using their own manual scans. This is not your average template.

This template includes all dishnet satellites (61.5-105-110-119-121-129-148), BellExpressVu (82 & 91)- as well as all local spot beam channels. I've also included AC-3,TID's/NID's and notes to show EPG names as they are seen from the original scans and notes telling you if Conus or local and from where.

Directions for use:

* Write down current LNB settings for each satellite.
* Backup your current Channellist to your computer via loader
* Scan whichever Satellite(s) you wish to view.
* Copy scan to your computer.
* Obtain latest version of ChannelMaster (located in these forums)
* Open your newly scanned list with ChannelMaster
* Click "File" on top left of screen ---> Import ---> Apply Template ---> Choose template located below ---> Click Open ---> Mark all slots except last option ---> Click OK.

You now have a completely named channel list with local spotbeams etc. The latest Channel/TP changes are included

* Save your work to another filename & upload back to your STB.

Notes:

* Maintaining DN/BEV Order & re-mapping locals: Right-click any channel and select "Fill missing Channels". This is up to your personal taste. I fill up to channel 2000 if using both DN and Bev, or 900 if only using DN. Should you choose this alternative, SID sort functions must be turned "off" in your STB.

* Scanning Notes: Please read other threads thoroughly regarding the best scanning techniques for your individual type STB.

I've gotten many questions about "why didn't the template rename my sat? In every case it was because there was more than 1 sat listed at a particular sat degree. For instance Galaxy11/Nimiq1,2 @ 91w. The sat that you have data & want renamed must appear on top of the other. Otherwise ChannelMaster, by default, will attempt to rename channels found in the first listing leaving your intended sat unchanged.

Be sure to double-check your LNB/switch settings after uploading the list back to your box. Settings tend to change when loading lists from older versions of ChannelMaster.

Any format channellist may now be used.
