An FTA card to replace my Sonicview 8000?

Hi,

I have never had an FTA card before and considering getting one. I'm having a Sonicview 8000 hooked up to my computer via a TV turner. This is not a very viable solution since the image quality gets lost along the way. I think an FTA card would better suit my need. My concern is whether an FTA card can replace my current SV8K. My questions for you are:

Why aren't FTA cards popular? I know one reason, people need a computer to run FTA cards, while receivers are designed to work with TV. Are there any other reasons?

Why isn't there any support for FTA cards? I only see support and bins written for receivers.

How are FTA cards compared to receivers in term on power?

From what I read on this forum, basically any tv card will do, what I need is a good software. Is my understanding correct? Can I get an ATI All in Wonder and a good software and say bye to my SV8K?

I'm trying to open my horizon. Any input would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks
Peter.
