CaptiveWorks CW-3000HD Dual Boot Linux-XP PC Setup
CaptiveWorks CW-3000HD Dual Boot Linux-XP PC Setup
These instructions will let you turn your CW-3000HD into a dual boot Linux-XP PC.
Captiveworks CW-3000HD
How to Make A Dual Boot Linux & XP PC
First lets assume that you already have your CW-3000HD up & running with a hard drive.
Connect a keyboard and mouse to the CW-3000HD
Next - Go to the asus website and download all the drivers for the M2NPV-VM motherboard http://www.asus.com Their global website has all the drivers. DO NOT install the bios update or you may not be able to boot the CW3000HD software. Burn these drivers to a CD & install them after you have installed Windows XP.
You will need another hard drive I used IDE hard drives cause that’s what I had on hand, it can probably be done with SATA but I am not sure if the configuration is the same, a 40 gig will do nice for basic PC operation but a 120 or more will be needed if you plan to record movies using “Prog DVB” or “My Theatre”
Remember the first drive has the Linux partitions on it so you can’t use it without a good understanding of how the Linux system works so for now lets say the first drive is not accessible yet.
(For a program to mount the Linux partition from within windows go to :
http://www.codejacked.com/automatically-mount-your-linux-partition-in-windows/ to download the free program)
Now power down the CW-3000HD and remove the power cord, top cover & remove the power supply (3 screws on the back) & swing the power supply out of the way so you have access to the second hard drive bay.
Remove the two screws that secure the DVD drive & remove the drive & mounting cage & swing it out of the way.
Take your second hard drive & configure it for slave operation then install it in the outer hard drive bay, the same way as the first drive so the connectors on both drives line up the same way (power connector on top), you will need a double connector IDE cable that is long enough to reach to the left front corner of the mother board, if the current IDE cable you attached to the first hard drive is not quite long enough to reach then swap with the cable that goes to the DVD drive & flash card, hook it up the same way.
Install the IDE cable to both hard drives, the end connector to the outer drive the next connector to the inner drive & connect the other end to the secondary IDE connector on the mother board (the same connector as for the single hard drive installation), connect both hard drive power connectors to the hard drives.
Tuck the ribbon cable nicely along the bottom to ensure it does not get caught on the card reader attached to the bottom of the DVD burner.
Slide the DVD unit back into place but do not screw it in, re install the power supply & boot the unit.
Be sure to press the “delete” key on the keyboard during boot to enter the bios setup,
You should now see both hard drives listed in the bios.
Navigate over to the “ boot” tab then down to “ Boot device Priority”, down the list to “first boot device” change to CDrom then F10 to save, Y “enter” to ok
The CW-3000HD should now boot but it may hang, once it has booted or hangs shut down the unit, remove DVD unit & remove the flash card from the card reader, disconnect the power cable from the first (master) hard drive, leave the IDE cable connected & the power cable connected to the second (slave) hard drive, replace the DVD unit & secure it making sure it is all the way forward so the door button will work.
Next power up the unit, open the DVD door & place your XP install disc in the drive, close the door & press the reset button on the front panel of the CW3000 to cause a re-boot.
You should now be able to install your operating system, drivers & software as you would on any other PC.
Once all is installed & running well as a PC , Power down the unit, re install the flash card & hook up the power cable to the first hard drive & re – boot ,”delete” on boot , go back into the bios & find the boot device priority page you will need to change 1st boot back to “Removable, 2nd to “CDROM”, 3rd to “HARD DISK”
Once those options are set press “esc” to get back to the main boot menu, go down to “hard disk drives” bump the card reader (SMI MODEL) from the bottom to the top of the list otherwise XP will always boot even if you have chosen the card reader as first boot device it will not boot the satellite receiver till you bump the card reader from the bottom to the top & set the order of the list as follows:
1st master (SMI MODEL)
2nd slave “your second installed XP hard drive
2nd master “your first installed CW3000HD hard drive”
F10 save & exit.
Now when you boot the CW3000HD should boot as normal
To boot with XP, you must shut down completely not just restart otherwise you will not get the pre boot screen, it is ok to chose “restart” when shutting down Windows & want to start as Linux but not the other way around, when you power up press “F8” during the first boot screen this will prompt the boot menu to appear, simply choose to boot from the hard drive you installed your XP on to boot as a PC. It will probably be at the bottom of the list.
So far the only problem I have found is they both fight for the correct time so what ever system you use for satellite epg let that one have the correct time, perhaps someone who knows about Linux may know how to solve this, as for me I know nothing about Linux so I did not want to start tampering with things & screw it up till I have some time to learn.
To use with Prog DVB or My Theatre you must download windows drivers for the card. The closest equivalent card is the “DigiStar” card, the drivers & Prog DVB can be downloaded here: http://www.geniatech.com/d_dvbs.htm
Note - the software revision on the cards are different but I was able to get it going with this version of Prog DVB & with the latest version of my theatre & it worked fine, I tried other versions & other popular programs but I had scanning, switching, or signal quality issues. When you install this version of ProgDVB remember to repace newer files on your system with these ones when prompted otherwise you will have issues.
Adding more ram & faster CPU will only speed up windows & not help with any issues you have under Linux as the system is already overkill for the operation of the CW-3000HD as it was intended.
Remember when adding faster CPU that the Athlon 64 dual core processors are not supported under the Linux platform installed so in will only function as a single core processor.
I plan to install The AMD A64 4000+ 2.6 GHz processor & 1024 Mb dual channel Ram.
Enjoy your new multi-media Xperience!
Thanks goes out to JoeNezZ for this guide
