Captain 8000HD

Can someone please provide a review of this STB. Is this box worth it for HD, its probably the cheapest HD box at $250. Can this box handle DN HD (8spk add on)?

The support for the CAPTAIN HD8000 has been pretty sparse of late, but has improved somewhat from being almost non existant, which is too bad as that is a very nice unit.

But, you may want to look at other HD capable units. Personally, I'd steer clear of the VS9000HD, it had/has a few issues that are the result of the unit being a new offering.

I have the 8000HD the box works well,, I heard it is only capable of mpeg2 and not mpeg4.

The box has a one button setup that has givin me as a newb an easy setup.
The hardest part of dealing with this stuff and the captain is finding the sats.
The support was flighty at best for a while..Apparently due to vender-- coder issues.
Support has been pretty good from Team Captain lately...I guess the bad reviews on updates for the box seem to be resolved as the only issue with the box itself was support.

Good box, Good picture, MPEG2 & MPEG4,,,I dont know enough to comment
about that...EASY SETUP!!!!

worth every penny.
easy setup some cool features.
a great supported unit as of late and just a great low cost way to get bev only hd for now.
6 year warranty.
the one button setup is easy as pie.it scans your goods for you,you practicly dont need to know anything lol and then scans the birds all in one step.
it can't do dn hd
sv8k/vs9k/ps 9200 are only basic hd units than can with add on.but the units are 400 and the add on is almost the cost of the captain 8k alone lol
yeah its a good one for dn reg.bev reg&hd&true ftahd.

arbors seal of approval based on extensive research.
if i where to buy a BEV/fta hd only unit it would be the captain 8khd at this time for sure if that helps.

oh,for those researching the captain8000hd.
the current bev ecm (like 82w where bevs hd is) currently didn't effect the captains.

Ok,

I'm 'kicking the tires' on this HD Captain 8000 for a buddy. My buddy doesn't have an HD feed so that's why I agreed to give it a shot. I've got a 6120 HD receiver and HD channels come in ok when connected to my BEV receiver. Quality of pictures blow me away when viewed on my Sony LCD '42.

Here's what I found :

-Had copied latest .bin file on my USB stick. But Captain 8000 never saw it no matter if I used 'MANUAL or SW' as options in setup. Had to use the loader to upload latest BIN through RS232.
-Had some problems finding sats but eventually found the 82 and 91. Did channel scan and got all channels but was not able to recognize any HD channels which are in 8XX range on my 6120 receiver.
-Unit gets very hot in TV stand.
-I knew TSN HD was on 830 but couldn't find channel.
-Colors were vibrant but not clear on non HD channels.
-My Viewsat Ultra provided better picture quality.

As an afterthought I'm wondering if this unit is a 'true blue' HD receiver. I've a suspicion that this unit just 'up-converts' to HD resolution like 1080i. That's why it's so cheap.

If not, what am I doing wrong ? Anybody have any ideas ?
