discontinued & OR no longer fully supported receivers reviews
I still have this oldie but a goodie working. What made the Coolsat 4000 so popular among home digital satellite dish users was its ease of use. Packaged with a really nice remote control, good looks and an impressive OSD on screen display makes the Coolsat 4000 a favorite amongst many FTA users.
Standard features are dual Audio/Video outputs. a fast internal CPU processor, great TV tuner, fast signal meter and powerful blind scan it's easy to see why this Unit has become a fan favorite.
An advanced channel list makes for easy sorting and searching of channels and the large 4000+ memory seems to be more than enough for most viewers. While not state of the art, S-Video and Digital Audio out connections are standard. One of the first units to truly support Multi Satellite dishes and scanning proved to be the 4000's strongpoint.
The most popular feature which makes the Coolsat 4000 a classic FTA Unit is its Eletronic Program Guide EPG but since the new ECM it cannot populate the whole guid at once because of it's lack of memory, controls are stellar and the remote control functions are always within fingers reach. While slower now than the new units available its channel scans are still within reasonable limits and it always pulls in maximum channels accross many different satellite. The only downfall to his this receiver has been its PAL to NTSC conversion which was a beef with many of its original users.
Powerful Channel Control by Favorites, Loc, Skip, Move and Channel
Sorting by Alphabet, Transponder
10 Languages (OSG and Menu): English, Spanish, Portuguese, French,
German, Turkish, Arabic, Farsi
Tele-text Support (OSD and VBI Insertion)
Last Channel Memory Function
Large 4,000 Channel Storage
Pre-Installed Channels (Optional)
Multi-Satellite
Various Video Games Included (Tetris, Sokoban)
Parental Lock/Installation Lock
Zoom-In Function
If you are not bothered by the lousy PAL to NTSC conversion and are looking for a cheap Fta Receiver or a solution for a second home Unit then the Coolsat 4000 is still worth some consideration. With all of the newer units today the prices have literally dropped from the sky on some of the older and genuinely solid receivers such as the Coolsat. For budget minded consumers the Coolsat 4000 is definately still worth a look and will provide you with many hours of digital satellite tv entertainment. Just don't know for how much longer.

By far the greatest advancement is the ability to connect to the receiver via ethernet to the internet to automatically receive the latest updated files.

Our initial first impression on this receiver is nothing but praise. Neosat has outdone many units in this price range with this latest model.
The Xtreme has all of the same features and technical specs as the Platinum model below plus TRUE HARDWARE BLINDSCAN and COMPONENT VIDEO OUTPUTS! If you are serious about your FTA, then you will want this new model.
The Viewsat Xtreme is a good quality satellite dish that gives a great satellite reception in the USA and Canada. Viewsat are one of the most respected and popular companies providing satellite equipment and the "Xtreme" is their most popular model. It has all of the features of some of the other popular Viewsat models, but also has some added benefits, such as smart search which make the viewing experience a lot more convenient if you do a lot of searching. Another useful feature is the component video output which is not available on all models.
The Viewsat Xtreme has a good powerful processor which is always a bonus. The main processor is a Conexant which runs at 160mhz and is more than enough for most people. There is also 16mb of SDRAM which is more than acceptable. It also has a very good on screen channel guide. You get a universal remote so that you are able to get all of your electronics on to one handset which saves a lot of time and trouble, as anyone who has had several on the go at the same time will know!
There is a good selection of outputs including ones for S video, Dolby digital optical and also component video and also 6 RCA's for sound and video. All of this means that you are likely to have all of the outputs that you need for whatever you are doing. If you use smart cards for your satellite access, you are able to plug them straight into the Viewsat Xtreme. This means that you are not only able to use the standard cards, but you should be able to use any future upgrades that are on the horizon. In fact the whole interface is very user-friendly and you should not have any of the problems that you get when trying to work out the intricacies of some of the less easy to use models. You should not have any problems getting a good variety of programs too, as there is the capacity to program 4,000 channels into the machine.

Often you get a product released to a certain market that is worth mentioning. The new Orasat 5 free to air digital satellite dish receiver is just that. We've been hard pressed to find another unit that is as easy to use as this one. While it is not as advanced as some of the higher end fta units this model displays its ease of use throughout. Updating this unit with the latest bins and fixes is a breeze as you can either load them from your PC or input the Nagra2 keys manually right into the receiver. This unit is very promising for users just getting into the fta testing scene.
We've asked our die hard fta users to give us some input on this little known receiver and the response has been very positive. This unit has been described as very powerful with options and funtions that come with higher priced Coolsat and Viewsat receivers. A sleek black enclosure graces the new machine giving it an elegant appeal that is sure to fit into most users decor.
Excellent video quality is another highlight of the latest Orasat 5 receiver. MPEG/MPEG-2 compliant shows it's ability to set the standard in picture quality.
Advanced satellite scanning gives you the ability to choose from up to 40 satellites depending on how many dishes and lnb's you have functioning. The On Screen Display is vivid with easy to master controls. The remote control is also easy to use with functionality a definate highlight.

One of our DSS testers received this receiver as a package deal with 18 inch satellite dish, 1 dual lnb, 1 data transfer cable and 1 DiSEqc switch. Everything needed to get up and running fast was provided. He was impressed by the easy installation and the quality of the parts provided. In less that 1 hour he was enjoying wide open fta multicultural satellite dish programming. The Orasat 5 has proven with us that while a relatively unknown in the market it offers great value and excellent options.

Once again another PVR enters the market and leaves us with another stellar report. The Sonicview SV-PVR 100 Digital Satellite Free To Air Receiver delivers unparalleled quality in a great free to air unit with a built in personal video recorder. The new Sonicview blew us away with its jam packed features and technical superiority. It definately came as a surprise why this unit is not getting more recognition in the FTA community as it is probably the best PVR unit to date.
The first thing we noticed about this unit was the high level of quality both inside and outside. A nice gunmetal finish accompanies each unit and gives it a nice look. The large remote control is also well made with well placed buttons. It's easy to get used to.
One thing that impressed us was the ease of channel scanning. After loading the unit with the latest firmware, we hooked it up and was pleasantly surprised how fast its scanning abilities were. A definate plus. The new EPG guide system proved to be just as advanced and the friendly remote control made adjustments a breeze.

This unit in our opinion is just as great if not greater than its rival that Pansat PVR-7000. Stellar picture quality and the ability to upgrade the internal hard drive to allow even more recording impressed us greatly. The 7 day electronic program guide that actually works was even more stunning. This unit pulls in everything under the sun and displays it on screen in no time.
This unit is definately going to be one of the hottest fta receivers for 2007. Boasting top of the line specs it definately outshines its competition in this market. If you are looking for a higher end fta unit with outstanding PVR capabilities then this is the unit for you.

The Sonicview 4000 is now one of the most popular STB's on the FTA market. On our recent survey by this site, it showed that the Sonicview 4000 is right at the top for most liked STB. The key features of seven day electronic program guide is great. The guide has very useful displays by category and type of shows you want to watch. The USB 2.0 memory stick loading capability is great. This feature allows you to load your latest bin file on your memory stick,( saving you space on your hard drive), then just plug it into the USB slot, and download the newest file from your memory stick right to your Sonicview 4000. This is great, keeps you from having to unhook your STB from your antenna and dragging it to your PC. The Sonicview also has future plans of a plug in play hard drive for DVR. The features below describe it well..
FEATURES:
USB 2.0 HOST Slot for S/W Downloading
Fully MPEG-2 & DVB-S Supported NEC MPEG Chip-Set Blind Scan Sharp NIM Tuner (Tuner Symbol Rate : 1-45MS/s) Channel Naming Supported
USAL Supported
Useful RCU Key-Functions for Channel Find, Edit and Signal Strength Display
First of all the EPG feature is one of the most important features of any STB. It makes no since to have all these channels if you have no clue what is showing. The EPG of the SV-1000 is very clean and easy to read. Unlike many other STB’s in which you have to scroll thru 48 to 72 hours in advance, the Sonic View EPG has next day access thru the push on a button. By pushing the read button you can go 6 days ahead to view programming. Just as some other EPG’s out there you have the ability to set a reminder to view programming at a later time. The Sonic View also has a feature to put the reminders in a list. This way you can add programming to a list and view your scheduled reminders. The Sonic View allows the user to alternate between 2 hours and 3 hours display. The EPG updates very quickly. You can update 7 day EPG in less than a minute. The Sonic View EPG also allows you to switch the EPG between single channel and multi channels. I also love the ability to search for a channel name instead of scrolling thru looking for the channel.
Support:
The Sonic View team has consistently shown that there support is second to none. They continually come out with updates quickly and are constantly adding new feature to their units.
RCU:
I always grab my remote first. I like to see its features and how ergonomic the remote is. I was very happy to see the large buttons. The EPG button is my most used button and it is right in thumbs reach. Since it is my most used button I was happy to see how large it was. The remote is a lot larger than the Viewsat, Pansat and Coolsats I own. This is a great feature. The off button is top center and is by itself. There are so many times at night with the lights off that I have to turn on the lights just to find the off button on the other remotes. I wont have that problem again. This is probably the best remote I have ever seen for any type box. There is only one drawback to the remote and it is its range. You cant point this remote anywhere and have it function. You must point it at the unit. I have heard that there is a fix for this, but I never recommend opening a unit that is under warranty.
Audio/Picture Quality:
I don’t have a HD TV so I really cant come picture quality as compared to other receivers. I must say that on the ED TV that I have the Sonic View has the better picture than the other STB’s that I have had before. One feature that I like is that there are different audio settings to choose from via the remote. The only feature that I could not find that may be there is the ability to change the picture quality manually. Sometimes there is a need to change the picture quality per the users discretion. This may be added in a later fix.
Software:
The software for the Sonic View is easy to install and is relatively quickly to do so. The channels scan very quickly as compared to the Coolsat, Pansat and Viewsat STB’s that I currently have. The menu is very user friendly. I can navigate through the screens very easily and the channel search feature is a plus. Setup is wasy and can be done very quickly. You can be up and running in a matter of minutes. You can actually scan a Sat in less than a minute. 30 to 40 seconds to be exact. Again this is one of the fastest units I have found. Upgrading the software is thru the serial port for the SV-1000 but Sonic view has went to the next step on their newer units by allowing upgrades via USB drives. Again Sonic View is ahead of the game when it comes to support. The Sonic View software allows you to set you locals in the menu. Just select your city and you are done. There is no need to re-arrange your channels. Just select your city and state, turn local channel numbering on and you are done. For those who want to use a channels list, Sonic View has not forgotten about you. Just use ChannelMaster to load your personal channel list and arrange your channels. Sonic View also lets you transfer data from one unit to another. You can transfer the main software, Channels, Bootloader or just simply transfer it all. This is a great feature if you just want to transfer the software and send this unit to another location so that the user can just scan their own channels or load their own channel list.
