READ! No Light on Hub

Testing is Vexing!

When you plug your Hub into the SV and it is hooked up to the Modem/Router via Cat5 cable you should see lights on the Cat5 end of the Hub. If you used to have lights on your Hub and now you don’t read on.

I got my new SV and Hub and hooked up. Everything was working. As I moved my SV around I unhooked and rehooked the Hub while the SV was on. The Hub and router lights went out. Since I was loading bins I did not know what the problem was and tried everything (see below). Thought I might have blown the Hub and ordered a new one. It was DOA. That’s statistically improbable and Hubs are pretty simple devices. After pretty much ruling out software I ordered a new SV (expensive hub test set). Hooked up the new SV and old Hub and the lights came on. It was the same with the new Hub. The lights on the Hub have to get power. The Modem/Router doesn’t supply power and the Hub doesn’t have batteries so power has to come from the SV. I noticed I got static shocks from the SV a couple of times and I don’t get static shocks in my area. Problem identified. PLEASE use a serial cable between the Hub and SV. Also discovered that when I hooked a 20’ serial cable to the SV and the Hub with a short CAT 5 cable the light came on but no commo. When I used a short serial cable from the SV to the Hub and a 20’ Cat 5 to the router I got lights and commo.

I now have a SV that has to back to SV for repairs unless a tech discovers the parts to replace. Look for the fixed box on Fleabay.

What I tried first:

Hooked up and the hub was talking to the router. I was moving the SV around and reloading bins. Unplugged and replugged the hub and it went dead.
Checked the router, tested the Cat5 cable, tried hooking directly to cable modem, reloaded bins, , reset to factory, etc. Nothing helped.
Thought the hub had shorted. Bought a new hub – nothing. No IPCONFIG menu or lights on the hub or router. So I:
Checked pins on RS232 port and they were OK. Loaded a bin with a null modem cable without a problem. So: Factory reset. Ran Sysclean bin. Loaded the factory 433 bin. Loaded pre hub bin 437p. Reloaded settings. Sats, channels. Loaded dongle 458 bin. Hooked up NEW hub. No lights on hub or router. Occasionally get the message “NETWORK ADAPTOR DOESN’T CONNECT”. Two green led lights
are lit on SV board near 232 port. It has to be the SV 8000 either hardware or software - probably software since I have never heard of an RS 232 going bad (now I have).
I feel I have been completely dongled.
