Problems Hooking Up External USB Harddrive
Is there any special installation that I need to know about to get my CS8100 PVR to recognize my external USB storage device? I thought it was as simple as plugging in the USB cable to the back of the STB, and woala!, No such luck. The STB does not seem to think it is connected. Has anyone had this problem? It is a Simple Tech USB Portable 500 GB. I'd grealty appreciate some help.

Re: Problems Hooking Up External USB Harddrive
Always format any USB stick or external hard drive to fat 32 before using them. Plug the External hard drive into the USB on your PC. Go to My Computer, select the drive the Ex HD device is plugged into, right click, select format and the select Fat 32. It's that simple...

Re: Problems Hooking Up External USB Harddrive
I also read that if it is a portable hard drive and has a place for external power source, to plug in the external power source. I have a WD Passport that I had the same problem with it, I so did some researching. I haven't tried it yet because although my WD Passport has a place to connect an external power source, I don't have the attachment cable and need to order one. If you try this, and it does make a difference, post your results back up and let me know.

Here is what happened to me. I had an external drive (western digital but makes no difference) which was in a hard drive enclosure that did not have it's own power source. I fought with tis for about 3 days. I did a lot of reading and came across a message someplace, can't remember where, that said that you had to have an external drive with it's own power source. being the cheap person that I am, I bought a new enclosure with it's own power supply, came home and took the western digital out of the other enclosure and installed it in the new one with it's own power supply, plugged it in and within 5 minutes it was working great and has never let me down yet. Mind you the drive was already formated fat32 with my computer.
Hope this helps

i tried this with my western digital passport but there is no option to format for fat32. It says the file system is NTFS and only gives me formatting options of quick format or enable compression.

You may want to download this utility here:
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/download/fat32format.zip
After unzipped it should be run in a command window at the file location as:
Fat32format DriveLetter:
Or from windows:
Start – Run – FilePath\Fat32format DriveLetter:
After the drive is hooked and recognized by the receiver, format it again FAT32 with the STB.

Re: Problems Hooking Up External USB Harddrive
I have that experience for a while ago. There are two things to get connected:
1. Use the portable hard disk with cable that has another end with two USB connectors to USB power source such as PC or PS3 or combination of any usb souce. Normally that kind of cable comes with your portable USB HD. Only one source of USB does not have enough power to some device.
2. Use with power USB hard drive which you don't need to connect two USB source.
