Hi guys,
Let me begin by saying that this site is doing a great job at providing help to fta users. Thanks !
I'm posting this for the benefit of those who have just purchased CW800 and don't have a serial port on their computers.
In order to load the latest bin, I went through following steps:
1)
1.a) - Connect usb to serial cable (usb - rs232) to any usb port on your computer.
Vista will detect the new hardware and will attempt to install drivers. In my case, it couldn't find the right drivers. I simply loaded the driver cd that came with the cable and vista found and installed the correct drivers.
1.b) - Verify install and find port number.
Click start, right click computer and select manage. Go to device manager and verify that the cable has been installed under Ports (Com & Lpt). Also note the port number written next to the hardware in brackets. In my case, it was COM4.
2) download uploader and factory bin from captivework's home page
2.a) - Uploader
http://www.captiveworks.com/software/UpgradeCW800S.exe
2.b) - Firmware
http://www.captiveworks.com/software...tive%20WorksV1[1].00_2007_08_24.bin
3) Connect cables and Prepare box
3.a) - connect cables between computer and receiver ( receiver off at this point)
3.b) - While holding the power button at front, turn the receiver on from the back side switch. When you see 'boot' on the panel, release the power button that you were holding.
4) Install factory bin
4.a) - Launch the loader UpgradeCW800S.exe.
Browse the download firmware file Factory_Captive WorksV1[1].00_2007_08_24.bin
4.b) - Under settings
Select Download S/W option
4.c) - Select a port
select the port you noted in step 1.b. In my case, it was Com 4.
4.d) - Hit the start button. You will see on the receiver panel digits rolling (counting down, 4000 to 0 for example)
4.e) - Once you see '-end-' on the panel, turn off the receiver by using the switch at the back.
5). Install New bin
repeat steps listed above to load the latest bin (at the time of this post, it was CW800SV1.56_2008_03_27.bin
6). Done with the installation !
7). Scan channels.
Some problems that I encountered at this stage were:
I had to play around with Antenna settings. I am a complete newbie when it comes to different types of lnb's and dishes. I did know though which birds my dishes were aiming at.
However, I had to go through Transponders one by one after selecting the satellite in order to get a lock (u hear a beeping sound when that happens along with the visual indication of Quality strength).
8). Wait for the receiver to autoroll.
after a few minutes, receiver autorolled ( updated keys automatically from what I understand ) and a message was displayed that keys were autorolled.
9). There was picture but no sound

Yes, there was picture but no sound.. abadss came to the rescue once again and as suggested, I did a hard reboot ( turned off receiver by using the switch at the back, and then turned it back on after 10 seconds ). That solved the problem

.
And now i'm a happy new owner of cw800 that is working the way it should be.
I'll keep playing with different settings and will post my experience in regards to any new findings that I think are of common interest to 'New users' like me.
thanks again ABA DSS. You guys rock.
disclaimer: I tried to be as precise and correct as humanly possible. But do use the settings/instructions at your own risk. It worked for my setup.
