Maxtor 1 TB External hard drive?

Just purchased a Maxtor "OneTouch" 1 TB ($169.00 plus s/h) external hard drive and would like to use it with a Viewsat VS Pro receiver. Reading the instructions that came with the hard drive there is some preloaded software to aid in installing of the hard drive on your computer. Has anybody had any luck using this hard drive and how did you format the hard drive?

Have you plugged in in to the VSPro yet? It should be good to go as-is.

Plug it in and go to Menu > Record > USB Port Select and select front or rear, (whichever you plugged the drive in) and go to Hard Disk Information. If you can see the drive you are good to go.

If not or you want to format the drive, go to Hard Disk Format and follow the instructions.

Also the harddrive has to be fat32 format. If you have windows vista it wont let you convert to fat32. At least thats what I had to do to work with my vs 9000 HD. Most harddrives come formatted in NTFS format which is more secure.

It should just ask you what format you want and how much space you want formatted very easy

If your drive has a Sleep mode[hibernate] option you may wish to turn it to off or never in it's utilities.
Sleep modes have been known to cause recognition and timed recording issues with the "PRO".
Also as Badboy states you can chose your Partition sizes.
Having a full tb you also may wish to move your default "PRO" 80/20% percent split to maybe 90/10% considering the volume of your drive.
Most of these decisions need to be made "before"you use your drive because accessing them later may cause you to format the drive and lose your recordings.
Just maybe read a bit before using this drive.
Also 1tb is much larger than the 500 gb V.S. recommends but let us know how it works out for you
Good luck
