First I'm SORRY if this is not the proper place to POST this question. I Posted it on the Newbies FAQ Forum "IKS vs. CS Differences" and others have the same questions and have not been answered yet, so I', posting it here and again apologize BUT, we would appreciate an answer from you MORE Experienced Users and Mods. Here it is:
-------------------------------------------------- If you're using a Router (eg. lets say a Linksys) where your Main ISP is going through the Router and from the Router to the STB , the IP Address shown on the Network of the Box (eg: let's say an Nfusion) IS the Routers Address and NOT your main ISP Address. For eg: on a Linksys it would show 192.168.1.xxx when you Open Network on Installation Menu. My question IS ... if this is what is showing ... is THIS the IP Address the IKS has? Or, it doesn't matter and, somehow it has my ISP Provider's IP assigned to me and NOT the Routers? Thanks this has been nagging me for a long time now. I hope I can find the answer here as I have Nfusion. Thanks and again if this is NOT the place for this Thread please tell me where it belongs in order to have an answer. Cheers ...

Re: Which IP address is "Logged" on Private or Public Server?
It's ALWAYS the WAN IP and not the Local IP.

Re: Which IP address is "Logged" on Private or Public Server?
Thanks CreativeGenius, I DO use Tor on my Firefox 3.6 but, since the Nfusion box is hardwire thorugh a Cat Cable from the Router directly ...how would Tor help me if the connection DOESN'T go through my PC, it goes just from the Cable Modem to the Router to the Nfusion?
Is there a way to use Tor with this Config? I have a Linksys WRTG2. Thanks! |

Re: Which IP address is "Logged" on Private or Public Server?
I'm sorry I assume WAN=Wide Area Network.
Does this means the IP Logged is the one from my Router, in this case a Linksys WRTG2 (would this be my WAN IP address...the 192.168.1.xxx ?) OR do you mean my "Real IP" given to me by my ISP Cable Internet Provider? Sorry for not understanding very well. Thanks again! |

Re: Which IP address is "Logged" on Private or Public Server?
Your IP address regardless of service (HTTP, FTP, FTA, etc...) is always the IP address your ISP assigns to you. Your router does the "local" routing of traffic back and forth among the various equipment on your local network (one side) and the Internet (another side).

Re: Which IP address is "Logged" on Private or Public Server?
So by what you all have been saying is that the "Real" IP that my ISP gave me IS the one that will be logged when using IKS, right?
Is there a way to have this NOT happen (some kind of "spoof" IP) when I connect through IKS? Thanks you very much for your kind answers.

A proxy, but i think my ip is safe in the server programmers hands. Some Servers have been busted and never a end-user suit. Its up to you my friend.

The only way to do what you want to do is to get a compatible router with DD-WRT firmware otherwise you would have to be able to somehow assign a VPN or proxy to a specific IP running on your LAN (since as you confirmed your Nfusion is not running from your browser). You can do that with DD-WRT....your router than becomes a VPN and although its not fool proof it will send a third party IP to the NFPS instead of your "real" IP. If you can accomplish that I wouldn't be too concerned with the MAC....they are easy enough to spoof from a routers stand point and thats all the ISP (or anyone outside your network for that matter) sees anyways. Of course they (meaning the ISP) have your MAC on file from your modem....but no one else can see it. There is a way to do this on SV's with DNS Redirect. Basically you are using your LAN IP as a "DNS" and thus all your traffic that is running through your LAN than becomes masked by a VPN or proxy that is running through your browser. I'm not sure though if you can use it on an Nfusion. |
