USB Hard Drive/USB Memory stick tips & issues.

USB HD & Memory Stick
I have been testing USB HDD & memory sticks with 9000HD v2. Found somethings worth sharing...

1. USB stick cannot be formatted using menu.
Format fails every time USB stick is used.
tried with 1GB, 2GB & 8GB Kingston memory.

2. Pressing Record button with memory stick takes anywhere from 1-5mins & sometimes does not even start recording.
3. Pressing Record button with HDD took about few secs & started recording.

4. Plugin USB stick takes less then 5 secs for 9000HD to detect & show.
5. Plugin HDD took 1-2 mins for it to detect & show. (so wait)

6. Format works fine with HDD (I used Comstar 500GB). But Comstar 320GB was not detected by 9000HD.

7. With latest version, no pre-format is needed for HDD with FAT32.

8. Connecting large capacity HD to 9000HD & powering up FTA, you will get message saying "No file system found", so HD will not work. unless you reformat it OR power up FTA first then connect HD and wait for the message... "XXX FAT32 found" in my case it was "500GB FAT32 found".

9. Connecting USB memory or HDD to STB does not get detected 60% of the time... following will happen...
* (no message)... system does not show anything connected
* No File system found
* Unsupported File system
Temporary solution is to goto Menu-> System Settings -> USB Port-> then switch between Front & Rear settings and exist, as this causing the port to turn off. Wait few secs & do it again, till you get Message XXX GB FAT32 found. I think it's BUG in VS.

I'm guessing that the sticks don't work for recording is that a 2 hour movie takes a little more than 4 gig's. and also a fat32format file only holds 4 gig's. When I record anything around 2 hours or more I get extension files and it is kinda a pain to put them in order to burn dvd's. But by far the best software to do this is convertxtodvd and is around $45.00

It does record, but is buggy as VS coders must have tested on HDD only. Yes FAT32 limitation is 4GB, unless it's NTFS. Record was tested on 30mins programme.

It seems USB detection has improved in PFTAHDSW-090108H_NewGUI version. I have been able to switch back and forth between USB HDD & memory stick & it does recognize it. No more Unknown devices or No file system found messages.

However detection of USB HDD does take some time as reported before so just wait 1-2 mins to get USB HDD message before recording anything.
