Fair enough, I don't guess all of you are wrong. Just a little frustrated I guess.
I bought a Coolsat 7100 micro-pvr.
I thought I did enough research but it is becoming apparent I did not.
I was under the impression that I would buy this and hook it up to a direct tv dish, find the satellite and watch tv(ignoring the bin part for now).
Now after more reading I am more confused than ever. Will a direct tv dish work? Do I need (to load) any software?
I guess I shouldn't have posted that but after 3 hours of trying to get info and signing up on different forums just to read a non helpful posts, I found a post here that was an installation guide and then the dreaded "must be a vip member" popped up.
Oh well thanks for listening.

Re: Help Needed
Ok you have a few questions here.
The dtv may or may not work, they make many different kinds if you can tell us exactly what type of dish and lnb you have we can let you know.
The receiver will not work at all for dtv, dn only.

Re: Help Needed
if you have the single lnb type it will work just need to align. if you have the 3 lnb type than you will not be able to align all three but could probably align one of them by moving dish. if you had dtv and are hooking up this receiver and think you will get signal you won't because dtv uses different sats and these boxes only pick up dn signals

a dtv single lnb dish will work. multiple lnbs are not compatible. yes, you'll need to load s/w & will probably have more results as to specifics under the coolsat sub-forum. sorry i can't give you a step by step but don't own a coolsat.
now, with regards to paid membership,
Free enterprise is a great thing that has worked well for a long time. I respect the owners right to fund this site as he sees fit. Any organization as large as this has got to require a massive amount of oversight.. I’m curious as to the motivation behind this or any of the other major fta sites. I see numerous advertisements plastered all over the top of each page. My guess is they’re represented here only by virtue of monetary compensation. I’m not familiar with how compensation is determined in the cyber world, but in other media it is determined by audience. With an average of over 900,000 hits per month from a target specific audience, I could only guess that compensation is "worth while". Whether additional funds generated from donations & membership dues are necessary for the expenses incurred or for increasing the bottom line, who knows? But either way, it’s the owners prerogative & we have the option of enjoying what’s available here without charge, as I do, paying a membership fee & have access to the premium services offered, or go away.
welcome to the site.

Unable to get dish pictures til the morning, but it is a single lmb so I should be good to go.
Is there a post/thread that anyone knows of that I can read to get most of the basic info regarding fta?(sats, channels, tips ect) I don't mind reading, and I know you guys get tired of answering the same questions over and over.

Re: Help Needed
Hey dude
I see you are begining to get a bit of info sent your way ... don't get overwhelmed ... we'll help set you on the right path.
First off, using a DTV dish for FTA is a great choice. And you Coolsat unit is a solid receiver as well.
Like a few people have suggested, the LNB's, the things with the white eye(s) on your DTV dish may or may not work for FTA applications. So, worst case scenerio is that you'll have to buy a couple of items to get you on the right track.
After we determine if the existing LNB on the dish is useable, you'll likely want to buy a Y Yoke or a mount that will allow you to mount two Dual DSS LNB's to your existing dish, this will allow you to be able to scan both the 110 and 119 airspace.
Then, you'll want to make sure that your receiver has the latest software loaded on it, these are often referred to as .bin files. Each brand of reciever MUST use the .bin file that is designed to work with it.
To load the .bin files on your receiver, you can use an USB stick (on your receiver) or failing that you can use a serial cable connected to your PC and the receiver to load the .bin file onto the reciever using a serial communications program called a loader.
So before we get way ahead of ourselves, I want you to take a good look at the LNB on your dish and provide us with some insight into any markings or model #'s etc ... it might have.
Then we'll be able to better tell you what to do next.

Re: Help Needed
this will give you an idea on what is out there and what sat it is on to choose what sat you want to watch since you have a single but i would start checking into multiple lnb dishes to get more sat's.you want to get a dn dish.

Re: Help Needed
Yup, that one will do just fine for 110 and 119 but the yoke (the LNB mount) looks like it may not be the right type for the TWIN lnb shown in the photo. So you might have to buy one.
No big deal though.

This is the perfect setup for beginners and OLD timers..!!!
It is Great for optimal channel pickup (possible 800+ DN channels)
also it is the "easiest to dial in".(allign to satellites 110/119)
Do NOT get rid of your Dtv dish and Lnb...after you get going with the initial learning process(which is not as complicated as most folks make it) you will have an overpowering urge to add add add more dishes, more recievers, more sats, more channels, AND MORE KNOWLEDGE !!!
The Dtv dish and Lnb are pretty tricky to allign...so that makes this dish a Great "Learning Tool"...hang on to it.
I see in earlier posts the guys have given you other tools to use...The dish pointer is Awesome...and a cheap satellite signal meter is also VERY handy (doesn't need to be high dollar & fancy, I got a kit for $15 w/meter,compass,jumpers,battery pack,& carry case...just punch in "satellite signal meter" in a web search)
And by the way.....
come on in, stay awhile, kick ur shoes off,,,wee haaaa
it's a great place to be............
welcome aboard !!!! (and i don't even work here) he he he he
(HINT: see all the FTA lingo underlined ? for example Lnb BEV Bin Stb )(Just click on those words in all posts for their fta Meaning. "dictionary")

Re: Help Needed
Hi Logic, I'd like to weigh in on the pay part. I am a newbie, ignore the fact I'm here since 2006 (I haven't had 2 years of experience, just one month of experience 24 times). Also, economics is a major factor (ie. money is an issue). I have looked at other sites and found some that provide free downloads. But here is the catch, when a new bin is needed the other sites claim they are jammed/overloaded and only VIP (ie pay) members can get in now, "the site will reopen in 72 hours" (ie 3 days). Look at the BIN postings for your cs7100. Take a time period, count the bins, do some kind of dividing, this number is how often you will be down. Now take 1/2 to a day for each outage (work up time and slippage) times the number of bins plus 3 days each for the number of bins in the period and that is how much TV you will miss using a free service. Look at the subscription and make your economic decision. I think it is an easy one. Add in the fact that this is a pretty **** good site for help and backup and it is a no brainer.

Re: Help Needed
Thanks for all the help guys.
I went to get the dish tonight($35) and it was brand new. He said he had more if I needed them. He mentioned that he installed them for a living and long story short he is coming by the house Thursday to install the dish and run new wire to the house for $50.00, by the time I buy coaxial cable, fittings and a post/pole to mount it to(due to trees, house mount wont work) I would have that much in doing it myself.
Is there anything I should make sure is done or not done when he installs?
He will not be messing with the receiver, just mounting the dish and running the wire to the house.

Re: Help Needed
just as long as it is pointing at 110 and 119 then it's all up to you once the cable run's into the house.

Just tell him you want it tuned in very Very well !!! when he is done...it's up to you...(a 7/16" wrench and very small movements on the dish)... your receiver has a built-in signal meter with the "green" or "sig" button on the remote...well most do....you want that signal a minimun of 70% in order to "lock" and you want that Quality up past 80-85% for a good "complete" scan.
I just done a Factory reset and rescan 15 minutes ago...my "Quality" meter on the receiver was buried at 99% and didn't flinch...picked up everything there is on 110/119 without a hitch....tuning that dish is "Key"
