What to buy?

We're about to get the stuff we need to set up for G-18, 123W. I know we need a 30" dish, (We're in central KY, according to the chart on Lyngsat, we need a 50cm dish, which is 19.68 inches, so 30" should be plenty. Please tell me if I'm mistaken about that.) and a linear or universal LNB. We're not going to be using a motor or getting fancy, just need to get the one bird, probably, we just want broadcasts in English.

We don't have a lot of money to play with here, so I'd like to keep the costs as low as we can, but I don't want to buy junk that won't work properly, either. A few extra bucks up front is better than buying stuff twice, IMO. We just don't need the biggest and the best or the fanciest of anything. Just your basic ol' reliable, is what I'm after.

Any suggestions about brand/type/etc.? Anybody know a place in central/south central KY that sells 30" dishes? I've been looking, and all I can find are the standard itty-bitty dishes for DTV and DN. Nada for true FTA. I could spend more on equipment if I don't have to spend half the money on shipping.

Thanks to all, I've learned a lot on this site.

Re: What to buy?

Just checked Hypermegasat - in the dealer section of the forum - has both a Hotdish 36" and the Winegard 30" for $99 to your door.

Looked on Ebay for you (you mentioned you only have dial-up) Found a 30" for about $90 - the 36" I found were more expensive.

Re: What to buy?

When it comes to selecting a Dish for FTA apps, the BIGGER the better.
How much space do you have for a dish. I'd go with a 36" dish at a minimum, with a motor and an invacom type LNB.

Can't go wrong with this set-up.
