A 3rd party group has developed a "Weather Forcaster" ethernet module for many models of Viewsat receivers.

The module will allow users to get real time weather forecasts for their local area via the internet right on their FTA STB. More "interactive" features that utilize the internet connection are expected to be introduced in the future.

Early information is that it will suport the following receivers: Ultra, UltraLite, MaxHD, 9000HD and the Pro. The Weather Forcaster is expected to begin shipping to end users the first week of March 2010.

Priced at around $110 USD.

Weather Forecaster Installation Instructions


This setup is almost as easy as the old standalone days... It is definitely the easiest of any other I have tried.

This is assuming your receiver is already hooked up to tv and satellite dish and ready to go.

1. Flash receiver via USB with your specific receiver sofware, in this case, Ultra-Lite, PFTAUSW-100222UL

2. remove WF from box, attach serial cable to serial side of main body, then connect other side to serial on receiver.

3. Connect your WF to internet via Ethernet RJ45 cable.

4. Click menu on receiver remote.

5. For static IP:
Go to installation => Serial Setup => Network Setup => Network setting => put your IP

For non-static IP
Go to installation => Serial Setup => Network Setup => Network S/W upgrade => Start Upgrade. Software for WF is upgraded automatically.

Once upgrade is done, exit from menu system, it is now functional!

110.00!!!!! for the weather!!! dont think so!!! You can get a complete receiver that has a lot more than the weather for 110.00. I guess maybe later you can get more than the weather. Think Ill wait awhile.

The word from the bird says it's available for pre-order now, and will ship on March 1. Who knows if that's true, but a $110 dongle is a pretty penny for it to be a fake.

I wasn't around for the N2 switch, but wasn't Viewsat always a loyal coding team...? Haven't heard too many hiccups from users in the past (with the exception of N3)

I'm not up with it right now...I wish. Looks like a few pre-testing units have been shipped in order to hype sales. Those pics were c/p from an alleged tester. I say alleged because we really don't know for sure.
