Bev to launch 2 new sats

Nimiq 4 @82.0°W 8 Ka tps and 32 Ku tps (2008)

EADS Astrium has been selected in January 2006 by Telesat to build the company’s new Nimiq 4 satellite. This is the third consecutive order for a Eurostar E3000 satellite from the Canadian-based operator following Anik F1R and Anik F3. Planned to enter service in 2008, Nimiq 4 will broadcast direct-to-home TV from its orbital location of 82º West.

Nimiq 4 will continue to enhance digital television services in Canada. It will feature 32 active high-power transponders in Ku-band and 8 in Ka-band. The multi-spot Ka-band payload will provide coverage of the most densely populated regions of Canada.

EADS Astrium, as prime contractor for Nimiq 4, will design and build the satellite and supply both the payload and the platform. EADS Astrium’s facilities in the UK Germany, Spain and France and will contribute to the design and manufacture of the spacecraft. Canadian industry will supply a significant part of the spacecraft equipment and technologies.

Nimiq 4 is based on the Eurostar-3000S version of the highly successful Eurostar communications satellite. It will have a launch mass of 4.8 tonnes, a solar array span of 39 metres once deployed in orbit, and spacecraft power of 12 kW at end of life. The double-floor E3000 model is equipped with an all-chemical propulsion system and Lithium-Ion batteries. The satellite, operating in geostationary orbit, will provide commercial services for a minimum of 15 years.

Nimiq 5 @72.7°W 32 Ku tps (2009)

Telesat, has announced in January 2007 plans to build and launch Nimiq 5, the latest in the company’s line of satellites carrying digital television to Canadian viewers. Telesat has selected Space Systems/Loral as the manufacturer for Nimiq 5, which is slated for launch in 2009. Nimiq 5 will be based on a SS/Ls LS-1300 bus.

A high-power satellite, Nimiq 5 will be equipped with 32 Ku-band transponders. Bell ExpressVu has contracted for the use of the satellite to provide a wide range of high-definition and specialty television services to its subscribers. It will occupy Telesat’s orbital position at 72.7 degrees West Longitude and have a lifespan of more than 15 years.

The satellite’s manufacturing plan also includes contracts with the Canadian satellite industry, including multiplexers and switches from Com Dev International Ltd. and antennas from MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates, Ltd.

The 1300, a powerful, space-proven platform for a wide range of services, has been in constant evolutionary development to deliver increasingly greater power, communications capability, and longer useful life, keeping the company in the forefront of satellite technology.

Total satellite power ranges from 5 to 12 kW continuously throughout the life of the spacecraft. On-board transmitter power — exceeding 5,000 RF watts — can accommodate as many as 70 active transponders. Launch mass tops out at approximately 5,500 kg. Standard satellites in the 1300 line will fit into a 4-meter launch-vehicle fairing.

The size and capabilities of the 1300 can be expanded to generate and process more power, and accommodate larger, more powerful payloads. In total, these changes can provide up to 40 percent more capacity than available in the basic model, ideal for any of today's demanding multi-band and spot-beam payloads.

The expanded models feature total satellite power that ranges from 12 to 18 kW throughout the life of the spacecraft, and on-board transmitter power — approaching 10,000 RF watts — that can accommodate as many as 90 active transponders. Launch mass of the largest version tops out at approximately 6,700 kg.
This version was earlier called 1300S.With all of their features and power, satellites in the 1300 line will fit into a 5-meter launch-vehicle fairing.
