I have just bought / hooked up a 360 Elite and am currently in the process of testing and getting used to it (essentially the identical unit except for the second tuner). I just acquired a new hard drive for it and am exercising that right now. So far, the only drive-related freezeup I have had is when the drive filled up. When it did, the front-panel display showed "USB" so at least it was trying to give me a large hint as to what had happened.
I will be sure to post about any idiosyncrasies I find related to PVR since it is one of the features I really want to use. For the time being, based on experience with prior equipment, I would recommend the following hints:
* Make sure the drive is USB 2.0 compatible. The older 1.1 standard is usually not fast enough for video.
* Good idea to format the drive using the STB, using the Fat32 (aka "Windows") formatting standard. If you have the time, and any time you think it appropriate, running a Scan Disk from the USB menu is a really good idea too (the STB typically may not know how to deal with any bad spots that develop naturally over time on all drives. Computers are smarter about that).
* Hard drives create a fair amount of heat, but don't like being warm -- go figure. Keeping the drive in an unventilated equipment cupboard with the STB and other stuff is an invitation to trouble.
