I never format the USB, and have never had a problem.

Well, it's not strictly necessary but for most folks it can help avoid problems. Even without you asking, Windows drops a lot of extra stuff onto the USB stick, and those things (like indexes, thumbnails, recycle contents) are all seen by the STB and can sometimes get in the way. (They can even fill up a smaller drive!)

Formatting is just an insurance policy that you are only getting what you yourself copy over.

You shouldn't have to unless your stick was reformatted for another function. Just try another stick
