Converting TS to mpeg2 or avi

I would like to take TS files from my external HD and convert them to mpeg2 or avi.
I already use ConvertXtoDVD to convert TS files to vob & burn on a disc, but I want to be able to store what I watch in a smaller format.

Any programs that you know of that can help me out I'd appreciate any info
