Re: no router straight to modem
no, you'll need a router; some cable and DSL modems, but not many, include a DHCP service for assigning IP addresses on your home network; also, a router provides many benefits, none more important the security of a hardware firewall;

This is FALSE. You do not need a router. All modems given to you by your ISP have DHCP. It is true that a router gives you a hardware firewall. But you have to take extra steps to open ports. Satmaxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Re: no router straight to modem
If i use a I-hub, does it mean I will able to watch anything?? cause my sv360 is totally gone, no channels at all, but the only channel I got was the one that tells me that I should subcrible to cable or dish

Yes, the iHub is up and working on 360P, 360E and 8000, albeit in beta mode, with good results; check other postings for the positive reports and experience others;

DannyBoy; what brand modem are you using; typical cable modems have one port, hence the need for a router to provide additional ports; some of ATT's 2Wire gateways have multiple ports and include a DHCP service but they are weak on security and do not have sufficient firewall and encryption capabilities; I recommend a router to better segregate your home network from the possibility of internet hackers;

Actually, router is bit more secure but not that much.
If you are using just one laptop or a PC on the other end, use software anti-virus, FW, and anti-spyware on that laptop or PC is sufficient.
Traffic between your laptop and your banks are encrypted through secure socket layer, NOT & NEVER by router or switch anyway.
So in short, getting router not necessary giving u much security. Yes, your switch might be seen on the Net if someone is scanning or probing.
But since you don't have a router or switch but just another port provided by your ISP, not much risk.
Save the $$$

I hear you George, but we'll have to agree to disagree on this:
Before I installed my home network, watching those traces/pings coming in from Asia and Eastern Europe, within the first 30 mins of going online, knocking directly on my PC and file system gave me a less than warm and fuzzy feeling; I guess I feel more comfortable and confident with Cisco than I do McAfee, Symantac or ZoneAlarm to protect my resources;
For the modest price of a router I'm getting NATing for multiple IP addresses at no additional cost from my ISP (which is the need that started this thread), the hardware FW and, if I choose, a S/W firewall on my most sensitive machines; I understand your points, but really can't see the argument against installing a $35 dollar device that provides a layered protection scheme from the hacks or ISP;

The short is no if your neighbor doesn't mind you connecting with a second device; you need a wireless network bridge or game network extender or some here have used wireless printer servers; that wireless device will connect to your neighbors network and then you would hardwire your iHub to that wireless device; that's a real nice neighbor if he allows that setup;
Another less convenient means would be to configure your PC as a network gateway; connect the PC wirelessly to your neighbors network and then hardwire your iHub to your PC/laptop; not practical unless the two are within close proximity and you run your PC all the while you watch TV;

SOFTWARE IS THE JUNE 8 BETA BIN and do the following steps below, if you dont get anyconnection after you do all the step below, that ok, just wait, that because the server are down and it will be back up anytime, so just check back in 15 minutes or something.
- Load the bin file for your receiver you downloaded above to your receiever.
- Plug in Sonicview iHub Ethernet Dongle into your 360 Elite, 360 Premier or HD8000 receiver.
- You will see a prompt that the dongle is connecting (can take up to 30 secs)
- Click menu-installation-ipconfig
- Setting type: DHCP
- Use DNS: YES
- Domain name: svftaiks.com (Do Not Use sonicviewihub.org - We Do Not Host the IKS server)
- Server port: 1920
- Serial number: put in your iHub/dongle serial number.
- Go to Apply and click OK (don’t simply Exit or it wont save, you must click Apply)
