Re: Make your own iHub for under $10
My buddy lost his Neosay serial number (when they expired ~ year ago) and went to MIRc chat and they gave him another, 23 digits all told so I would say that the S/N can be program in some STBs.

Yes, but this isn't a Neosat with built-in ethernet port.

Actually, he may be onto something there. Most "serial numbers" are simply a hash checked against an algorithm, and if the key fits... In the case of people like MS, the key is then sent to a server, registered, thus nobody else can register with that key. It makes sense. Makes a guy wonder what the SV would do if say, you had 2 boxes, but only 1 iHub going between the STBs... Does it pull a microsloth and say "sorry, already registered..."?
Ah, the fun part of testing is asking these questions... kind of like why did the guy climb the mountain? BECAUSE IT'S THERE!

Re: Make your own iHub for under $10
I have a feeling if it uses a serial # in the Ihub that it will register with the receivers serial #. It would cause a issue. But that could be reading more into it. Hey, I will build one if it works.

Re: Make your own iHub for under $10
The unit the iHub is based on is $28.00, the iHub is $99.00+ do you think they are not going to write a couple lines of code to protect the $71.00 cost difference and ensure that only 'their' product connects to the server ... ?

Re: Make your own iHub for under $10
I am sure of it. Even if someone happened to build a IHUB and connect to the server I am sure that they would have a clone killer written into a software update.

Re: Make your own iHub for under $10
here's an update.
i emailed tech support and here's what they replied verbatim:
Hi, These will only work with the sonicview hd8000, premier, elite. If connected to another electronic device it will disable the ihub entirely. This does not have a file out for it as of yet though.
My deepest apologies for posting something w/o consulting the manufacturer first. That was my bad. I thought I had read up on homework, but I was wrong and there's more to it.
However, based on several of the replies above, rest assured I will not stick my neck out at ABA ever again. For those who provided personal opinions and negative attacks, I would have appreciated to be corrected in an appropriate manner based on manufacturer facts, not personal opinions. It appears I'm the only one who really went out and searched for the evidence and found the truth. Or at least, the only one to post it on this thread.
I'm out.

Re: Make your own iHub for under $10
Hey Fossil112:
You did great work, you debunked something I'm sure a lot of people had wondered about.
I had pondered the same thing myself! It was just a matter of time before a thread got started on this topic ... better yet we can now put this to bed for the time being.
So thank you for laying the ground work for this Thread in the first place, I'm with BigE, many would have liked to have found a work-around to a $99.00 USD adapter you can buy for $28.00
