MONTREAL (AFP) — Telecommunications giant Bell Canada will eliminate about 2,500 management jobs as the company restructures to cut costs and increase competitivity, parent BCE Inc. said Monday.
The job cuts represent roughly 15 percent of the firm's white-collar employees and 6.0 percent of the total work force, said the publicly traded company, which is in the process of being taken private.
The new BCE president and chief executive, George Cope, has already slashed his management team by a third after taking up his position two weeks ago.
The restructuring was expected to generate 300 million Canadian dollars (294 million US) in annual cost savings, BCE said.
"We are moving forward with a streamlined management structure that brings everyone at Bell closer to the customer and allows us to compete more effectively," said Cope, who also is president and CEO of Bell Canada.
"This new structure positions us as a far more efficient and cost-effective operator in the intensely competitive Canadian communications marketplace."
Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and its US partners Madison Dearborn, Providence Equity and Merrill Lynch are buying BCE for 51.7 billion Canadian dollars, or 42.50 dollars per share, in the world's largest leveraged buyout.
Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland and Toronto Dominion Bank are financing the acquisition, which is expected to be completed by December 11.
