Echostar wants your name!!!!

Echostar Trying To Get Info On Innocent Customers Of Satellite TV Receivers

from the this-again? dept

You may recall a few years back, prior to the RIAA embracing the concept of "pre-litigation letters," that DirecTV was a huge proponent of using them. The company had sued some companies that sold smart card readers -- which could be used for a variety of purposes, only one of which was potentially unauthorized access of satellite TV signals. However, DirecTV was still given access to those company's full customer lists, and proceeded to send most of them one of those pre-litigation letters, demanding $3,500 or saying that a lawsuit would be filed. Of course, plenty of buyers had perfectly legitimate reasons for purchasing a smart card reader that had nothing at all to do with pirating satellite TV. But, no matter, pay up or go to court. And, in fact, many people just paid up.

Eventually, a court finally told DirecTV to knock it off.

However, it appears that DirecTV's main competitors, Echostar never got the message. The EFF is pointing out that Echostar is trying to gain access to the customer lists of a bunch of sellers of a satellite receiver even if there's no evidence that the individual buyers used the satellite receivers to pirate Echostar's satellite TV service.

Re: Echostar wants your name!!!!

Am I the only one who is thinking about all the trees that will be getting cut down to make up the paper for this bull**** letter ? Seriously, you make millions upon millions of dollars...send emails... p.s. They used the freetech inc. example (makers of coolsat products) how many people can that list produce...5?

SIDE NOTE - When buying anything of a grey legal matter, remember... ALWAYS CASH. NO PAPER Trail.

Re: Echostar wants your name!!!!

I can`t even believe we are talking about this crap again.

I bought a fta stb.....I use it for that purpose and you can come into my house with a search warrant and i`ll prove it.

If you want to try to prove that i loaded a third party file on it you will need that warrant.

Not going to happen !!!

Already been an appeals court ruling that meer possession of the equipment does not constitute a criminal act of theft. That's why Dave's people had to slow down their extortions.

Well,
I have been watching sat broad casts from the days of the 10 foot dishes and now
I watch sat broadcasts from pie plates. Back in the day before the internet we used to
get our keys from a fax modem. Actually enter the keys. Used to take me 15 minutes to enter the key codes but this is before bin files came out. My pals loved the fact that my huge dish could scan the sky with a motor. Awesome was the usual responce.
Now we have a very unique situation.
Most people have a static set-up compared to the older days days of scannining everything. Once you have your arc set for a motorized scan, What you get is what you see. My fta box shows me that there are numerous fta satellites out there.
How about Hi-def too?.
My stb never goes down because I use it for "free to air ''
considering this is why I love most of the Galaxy birds eventhough they are still setting new orbits at this moment. If you scan the full spectrum of birds, you will find that bev and charlie are only one part of the game.
